And certainly not the last. This tomato “architect” has created quite a few masterpieces, and her varieties are deservedly popular among connoisseurs.

Pineapple Sergeant is a representative of a large family of varieties derived from the “head of the household,” so to speak—the famous Sgt. Pepper’s variety. It’s a fantastic foundation for breeding work. I already have several Sgt. Pepper’s derivatives in my collection, and I hope to add more.

Here, just like with Sofia’s Sweet Caramel, I ended up with two distinct variants: one with strong anthocyanin, and one without. Everything else is identical. Orange bicolor hearts, often with a pink core. The one variant obviously has the dark purple shoulders.

They averaged up to 200 g (7 oz) in weight. I had a couple of larger fruits as well. Very tasty tomatoes, a true delicacy, practically with the texture of fruit flesh, yet they remain firm and store quite well. The only pity is that they produce very, very few seeds.

The bushes have a thin, wispy foliage structure, and the variety is mid-season.

Y

Yulia Antsifrova (Yulia) ⭐ Vegetable Grower (191 posts)

📍 Medyn, Kaluga Region, Russia (USDA Zone 4)

In my case, I ended up with this variant of the variety. The fruits were uneven hearts with a slightly sideways “nose.” Quite productive. The weight varied noticeably—the large ones maxed out around 300 g (10.5 oz), while the smaller ones were around 100 g (3.5 oz). Inside, it was a yellow bicolor. It grew in full sun, so it developed a good amount of anthocyanin.

However, the taste didn’t impress me at all. I grew seven of Sofia’s varieties in 2025; out of those, only two were “wow” in flavor, one (a segregating off-type) was decent, and the rest flew under the radar. Maybe I just got really “lucky” with the genetic segregation.

The flavor turned out a bit empty with some sweetness, unexpressive, leaning closer to bland. I intentionally picked the fruits at different stages of ripeness, and all the tomatoes ripened on the vine, I just varied how ripe I let them get. While Strawberry Sergeant (Klubnichnyi Serzhant) was fantastic almost every time, I was never able to catch that moment of perfect flavor with Pineapple Sergeant. I still have some unplanted seeds of Blushing Pineapple Sergeant (Ananasnyi Serzhant Rumyanyi) left, maybe that one will surprise me next season.

I am still searching for a perfect yellow version of Sgt.
