An orange\/yellow version exists called <em>Eros<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>\ud83c\udf3f <strong>Plant Habit:<\/strong> Indeterminate (tall), very vigorous, and typically a very heavy yielder. Mid-season to late maturity.<\/li>\n<li>\ud83c\udf45 <strong>Fruit Characteristics:<\/strong> Famous for its elongated, cylindrical shape with a distinct bifurcated (cleft) tip. It&#8217;s just a massive bare stem with a flower cluster at the very end. For me, outdoors in open ground, it was mid-early. It always seems like apples are sweeter in someone else&#8217;s garden\u2014hers always looked more vigorous and productive! \ud83d\ude48 Well, it turns out mine was just as great this year! \ud83d\udc4d It dropped almost no blossoms, set fruit perfectly right up to the greenhouse roof, pruned to 2 stems. On the one hand, my kids absolutely loved eating them (they love this shape), and it&#8217;s excellent for canning&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But on the other hand, I can&#8217;t bring myself to recommend it to anyone yet.<\/p>\n<p>Why? It&#8217;s vigorous, sturdy, beautiful&#8230; and extremely finicky. It drops its blossoms at the slightest cold spell (and my Junes are usually very cold). BER shows up during hot weather when watering is insufficient. No amount of Calcium nitrate feedings helped.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, during the early fruit growth stage (and basically all summer), it was cold. Just in case, I fed it with Calcium nitrate a few times and made sure the soil under the plants was always moist. Not a single fruit got Blossom End Rot!<\/p>\n<p>The second photo is from this year\u2014late August. It turned out to be even more productive than Auria in the greenhouse, and there was very little BER, despite the hot and dry summer. It suffered from BER, but after an application of Calcium nitrate, everything returned to normal. Eaten fresh, it&#8217;s not great, but in jars, it&#8217;s excellent. It ripens late, but the variety stands out for being incredibly low-maintenance in my conditions\u2014Auria always grew in open ground, and is resistant to diseases and low temperatures. It bravely survived bad weather without any disease issues. The yield is good, maybe even a bit above average, and the taste is excellent.<\/p>\n<p>One setback\u2014I lost my seeds and in the spring had to buy a plant labeled &#8220;Ladies&#8217; Man&#8221;. The taste is similar, also late-ripening. The only thing that confuses me is that on some fruits, instead of the characteristic fold, there is a nipple. It always yields a lot of fruit, in large trusses, and keeps fruiting right up until frosts in the greenhouse. In my opinion, Auria&#8217;s taste is nothing fancy, but it is pleasantly tomatoey. For us, it works great sliced into rings for salads (instead of small cherry tomatoes) and on pizza. If you find a good brine recipe, it&#8217;s pretty good in jars too. We made it in its &#8220;own juice&#8221; with spices, and if you get the spices right, it&#8217;s very good. True, it&#8217;s not a soft paste tomato you can slurp down in one go, but the shape is very convenient for canning.<\/p>\n<p>In an outdoor bed during a 40-50\u00b0C (104-122\u00b0F) heatwave, it didn&#8217;t catch BER at all. But this year in a container, when I was late with watering, some fruits got affected\u2014though not critically, just a mark on the tips, it barely affected the size of the fruit.<\/p>\n<p>And I love that it sets fruit well in the heat, although it prefers light shade. I used to plant it in the 4th row of the bed, but now I placed it in partial shade by the fence.<\/p>\n<p>But WHAT shapes! This was the first truss in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>And this is this year in a pot, planted out at the end of June (I was late with sowing this year), but we are already eating ripe fruits, and it grew over the two-meter (6.5 ft) fence. In the end, along with a Korean long-fruited variety, it was one of the most productive. It shot up to nearly three meters (10 ft) tall by October. Definitely repeating. The bush was fluffy and sprawled all over the ground. Fruit set was perfect, yield was excellent. We managed to save the bush growing outdoors by covering it with plastic film until November 1st, 2018.
