Named “Alsou”, a beautiful traditional Tatar name meaning “rose-colored water”. It is highly regarded by growers in short-season climates around the world.

🌿 Plant Habit: Tricky! It is technically semi-determinate. If grown outdoors in the open garden, it stays compact (about 80-100 cm / 3 ft). However, if planted in a greenhouse and fed well, it can stretch like an indeterminate up to 1.5-2 meters (5-6.5 ft). Like many true oxhearts, it has classic wispy, weeping foliage and thin vines. Don’t let its frail look fool you!

🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Gorgeous pink oxhearts. The fruits can get absolutely massive, typically 300-400g (10-14 oz), but often reaching up to 800g (1.7 lbs) or even 1 kg (2.2 lbs) on the lower trusses. Very meaty with few seeds.

👅 Flavor: Sugary-sweet with a dense, “watermelon-like” flesh. An outstanding flavor profile for an early tomato.

⏳ Maturity: Very early season. It is often the very first large beefsteak/oxheart to ripen in the garden.

💡 Growing Tip: Because the foliage is so sparse, many forum members recommend planting them densely, or even putting two plants in one hole!

🍅 Grown this variety? Click here to add your own photos and review below!

C

Cherry (Olga) ⭐ Pro Grower (6,822 posts)

📍 Baranovichi, Belarus (USDA Zone 5)

ALSOU

A variety from “SibSad”. Pink-fruited, heart-shaped.

I grew it in 2012. It grew in my greenhouse, reaching a height of about 1.5 m (5 ft). The plant looked frail, the main stem was thin, and the foliage was wispy/drooping. My seedlings had a “late start” (I bought the seeds late), maybe that’s why it didn’t perform to 100% of its potential. I pruned it to a single leader, and it managed to set 3 trusses. The fruits weren’t overly huge—roughly between 200 and 400 grams (7-14 oz). Quite juicy, good balanced taste, but not mind-blowing (I had other pinks to compare it with). I want to stress again that my seedling was a bit stunted at transplanting, so my conclusions from 2012 aren’t entirely objective. Plus, you can’t judge a variety based on just one year. So please take my description as a first impression, not a definitive verdict.
