Known in Russian as Bych’ye Serdtse Chernoe. Growers often debate how it compares to the American variety Brad’s Black Heart.

🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate. It features the classic “wispy, drooping” oxheart foliage, but the main stem is thicker and sturdier than many other oxhearts. It produces suckers moderately, making pruning easy.

🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Dark maroon/purple, heart-shaped tomatoes. They are large, typically weighing 7-14 oz (200-400g), but can reach up to 21 oz (600g). Note: Seed savers advise only saving seeds from perfectly heart-shaped fruits to keep the genetics pure, as it occasionally throws flat megabloom fruits.

👅 Flavor: Exceptional. A rich, sweet, and complex dark tomato flavor. Meaty and perfect for fresh eating.

⏳ Yield & Maturity: Mid-season. It doesn’t go crazy with suckers, very well-behaved. The fruits are dark maroon, heart-shaped, large (mine were up to 21 oz / 600 g), and just freaking delicious. The yield is average, but for the sake of this flavor, it is absolutely worth growing. It fruits evenly across all trusses; after the first and second trusses ripen, it sets fruit perfectly on the upper ones too. There are 2-4 fruits per truss, and the upper ones are not small at all. I will definitely be planting it again.

M

Marina ⭐ Pro Grower (5,182 posts)

I had two plants and both were sickly, the leaves turned black.
