This is a critical biological deadline.

The Science Behind It: Right around day 7, a tomato seedling internally begins forming its first flower truss. If you transplant the seedling during or after this crucial window, the transplant shock forces the plant to abandon truss formation so it can focus on root regeneration.

The Consequence: A late transplant doesn’t just delay the plant by a few days; it physically shifts the first truss from developing after the 7th true leaf up to the 9th true leaf. This pushes your first blooms back from day 30 to day 45—a massive 2-week delay in your harvest!

F

Fenix (Pavel) ⭐ Member (1,590 posts)

📍 Ivanovo (USDA Zone 4)

Good day, Andrey!

Let’s talk about Days to Maturity (DTM).

Capitalist marketers count the DTM from the day you transplant seedlings outside—it gives them nice, pretty, low numbers to print on the seed packets.

Some hobbyists count the days from when the sprouts first emerge, though thankfully there aren’t too many of those.

The vast majority count the days to maturity from the day the seeds are sown. I personally count my days from potting up. It’s more realistic, since you’ve done your artificial selection by then and created the real conditions for their final growth in the permanent beds.

To get 100% ripening on tomatoes, we do a partial topping (pinching the growing tips), and later a “hard” topping. That forces almost all the tomatoes on the vine to ripen without losing quality.

F

Fenix (Pavel) ⭐ Member (1,590 posts)

📍 Ivanovo (USDA Zone 4)

6 hours ago, MADanilich said:

I personally count my days from potting up. But here’s the science on it:

If you mess up the timing for potting up your seedlings (meaning you do it later than the 5th day after emergence), the appearance of your first flower truss will shift from the 7th true leaf up to the 9th leaf—meaning a two-week delay.

This happens because right around day 7, a tomato internally begins forming its very first blossom cluster. If you pot it up right at that time or later, the transplant shock forces the tomato to put truss formation on hold, because it has to divert all its energy into regenerating a root system.

And it doesn’t just delay it by 2 or 3 days; it sets it back a full two weeks. So your first truss won’t show up on day 30, but rather on day 45.

Because of this, it really is much more accurate to count your DTM from the day of emergence—that way you can actually look back and figure out exactly where you screwed up your timeline.

📌 Thread Summary: When to Pot Up Tomatoes & The 5-Day Rule Topic: A deep dive into the exact timing of potting up (pricking out) tomato seedlings and how this single step drastically affects your early yield and Days to Maturity (DTM).
