The name translates to “Grandma’s”.

🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate, vigorous, and tall (easily pushing past 7 ft / 2m in a greenhouse). An absolute workhorse of a plant that pumps out heavy yields. Often grown to 2 or 3 stems. Susceptible to leaf mold (Cladosporium) in humid environments.

🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large, classic red beefsteaks that are round to slightly oblate. Average weight is around 10-14 oz (300-400g), but they can easily reach 1.3 lbs+ (600g+). They are exceptionally meaty. Interesting quirk: The very first fruits on the bottom trusses are often completely seedless.

👅 Flavor & Use: Real, old-school, classic tomato flavor. Sweet, juicy, and balanced. Excellent for fresh eating as a slicer, but also incredibly popular for processing into juices, sauces, and spicy relishes due to its massive yield.

⚠️ Grower’s Note: This variety is notoriously prone to “yellow shoulders” (hard yellow tops that fail to ripen) if it is exposed to intense direct sun or if the plant lacks sufficient Potassium (K) and Magnesium (Mg) during the fruiting stage. Feed heavily!

🍅 Grown this variety? Click here to add your own photos and review below!

M

Marisha (Marina) ⭐ Pro Grower (3,652 posts)

Tomato “Babushkino” (Grandma’s).

Babushkino – (I got my seeds from V. Fruits are large, round, bright red, very meaty, and sweet, weighing 10-14 oz (300-400g). Clusters held up to 5 fruits. Set fruit without skipping a beat. Every single truss set, and the fruits were huge (the biggest was 1.4 lbs / 628g). The flavor completely won us over too. Exactly the kind we love. Juicy, aromatic, sweet-tart taste. A true classic tomato.
