The name “Boloto” translates to “Swamp”. It was named for its unusual muddy, bronze-green, olive color when fully ripe.

🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate, but generally on the shorter side. Growers report it staying quite compact, usually ranging from 0.8m to 1.5m (2.5 to 5 ft) depending on whether it’s grown outdoors or in a greenhouse.

🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Green-When-Ripe (GWR) oblate beefsteaks. When fully ripe, the skin takes on a bronze or olive-yellow hue, and the bottom may show a pastel or slight pink blush. Very juicy and tender. Weight averages 150-350g (5-12 oz). Known to produce megablooms.

👅 Flavor & Shelf Life: The flavor is highly debated! Many consider it a top-tier gourmet tomato—incredibly sweet, fruity, and superior to the famous Malakhitovaya Shkatulka (Malachite Box). Others find it too watery. Crucial Warning: It has a very short shelf life. It must be eaten exactly when ripe; if left on the vine too long, it turns into absolute mush.

🍅 Grown this variety? Click here to add your own photos and review below!

S

Svetlyachok-plus (Svetlana) ⭐ Pro Grower (1,450 posts)

Boloto in the catalog on the old forum.
The discovery of this season. Grew out in the garden (open ground). Almost without pruning. While it was dry, I managed to remove all the leaves up to the first truss and pinched the suckers once. But then the rains set in and it was impossible to even walk up to the bushes. So my tomatoes grew however they wanted. A beautiful bronze-green oblate little tomato. I reeeally loved the taste, rich, sweet (but not overly so) with a slight tartness, I would even say a hint of saltiness 😋. The tomato is not a keeper at all, it’s very tender and juicy. In my opinion, it’s much tastier than Malakhitovaya Shkatulka (Malachite Box), which I grew in 2012. But that’s purely my opinion. Fruit weight ranged from 120 to 320g (4-11 oz). Mine was not particularly disease-prone. I will definitely plant it again. Left some for seeds.

Edited January 24, 2015 by Drosera

M

Marishka (Marina) ⭐ Pro Grower (2,330 posts)

I’ve realized that with Boloto, there are as many opinions as there are people, so here is mine.
Boloto tastes like just ordinary tomatoes, nothing special.
