Slicing/salad type. Mid-season. The plant is a determinate dwarf (rugose/tree-type). Leaves are medium-sized, dark green. Inflorescence is of an intermediate type. Jointed stem.
The fruit is cylindrical, smooth, of medium density. Color of unripe fruit is green with a small dark spot at the stem end, ripe fruit is yellow. Number of locules is 4-6. Fruit weight is 60-120g (up to 148g / 2-5 oz). Taste is good to excellent. Dry matter content in the juice is 4.0-4.6%, total sugar 2.1-3.3%.
Yield of marketable fruits is 163-494 centners/hectare, while standard varieties Demidov and Sibirskiy Skorospelyy yield 194-402 centners/hectare. Marketable fruit output is 69-86%. Tolerant to adverse weather conditions. Fruits ripen perfectly off the vine.

Description from the Agros seed packet (Novosibirsk):
An early-ripening variety that is undemanding to growing conditions. The bush is dwarf (tree-type) and compact. Fruits are large (up to 180g / 6 oz), lemon-yellow, oval-elongated shape, for universal use. Variety advantages: early maturity, high yield, seedlings do not get leggy. Recommended for growing in open ground. Growing features: The plant does not require pruning or staking, which makes it easy to grow.

I really loved this variety! The plant itself is tiny, but the fruits are unexpectedly large. Lemon-yellow, meaty, dense fruits. Almost seedless! Usage: salads, canning, dehydrating (sun-drying). The fruits transport well and have a good shelf life.
Comparing the two Buyans (red and yellow) – the fruits on the yellow one are larger, and it’s more productive.

Edited February 20, 2015 by Drosera

A

Alena Latviya (Alena) ⭐ Pro Grower (1,366 posts)

📍 Latvia (USDA Zone 6)

Could you tell me what height the Yellow one reached (if possible, at the beginning of fruiting and at the end of the season), and what kind of support is required – I am growing it this season, so this is very relevant to me.

Thank you!

G

gggalina (Galina) 🍅 Member (447 posts)

Alena, Buyans are very short, 30-40 cm (1-1.3 ft) – if grown in open ground.

The seedlings do not get leggy.

Theoretically, you don’t have to stake them, but I stake everything, even little guys like these, because flea beetles run rampant here right when we plant seedlings out, and they eat the tomato leaves.

Wishing you a successful Buyan harvest 😋

A

Alena Latviya (Alena) ⭐ Pro Grower (1,366 posts)

📍 Latvia (USDA Zone 6)

Mine isn’t ripening yet, it has set a decent amount of fruit, but I don’t know if it will have time to ripen.
