Named in honor of Pyotr Bagration, a famous general of the Russian Empire during the Napoleonic Wars.

🌿 Plant Habit: Semi-determinate to short indeterminate, reaching about 1.3–1.5 m (4–5 ft). It responds well to staking and suckering, but can also be left to sprawl on the ground if you have the space.

🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large, red, oblate beefsteaks. While the official description says “slightly ribbed,” they often produce heavily lobed, almost boat-shaped fruits (sometimes referred to as “crab claws”). They can get massive—up to 750g+ (over 1.6 lbs)!

👅 Flavor & Texture: A great balance of sweet and sour/tangy. The interior is very juicy with plenty of seed gel, so it is not a dry or dense paste-type tomato.

⏳ Maturity: Mid-season. The company’s description reads: “Mid-season, 1.3-1.5 m (4-5 ft) tall, requires staking and pruning, fruits are oblate and slightly ribbed, great for salads and processing.”

In our garden, they weren’t always just flat—they often took on heavily lobed “crab claw” shapes (similar to the Crab tomato variety). The height description was spot on, but we actually left one bush totally unpruned and unstaked, and it just sprawled all over the ground. The uprooted plant in the first photo was taken on October 11, 2018. It threw out a few suckers, including two right from the very base of the plant.

The last green tomatoes we picked at the end of the season had about a 50/50 success rate of ripening indoors off the vine. The flavor is definitely above average with a nice sweet and sour tang (in our opinion, it tastes better than Cuban Black, but not quite as good as Japanese Black Truffle). The interior is very juicy—there is plenty of seed gel mixed in with the meat, meaning it’s not a dry/dense tomato.

We grew 3 bushes in different spots outdoors in open ground. They all performed well, giving us average yields but with a really nice extended harvest window. That giant one sitting on the scale weighed in at 759g (1.67 lbs)!

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Bagration 🌍 Origin: A commercial variety from the Ukrainian seed company “Nasko”.
