I read somewhere that aster seeds lose their viability extremely fast. Two years in a row, I bought commercial seeds, sowed 60 of them indoors in March, and maybe 2 or 3 sprouted. I was so frustrated. But I can&#8217;t stop myself from buying the packets!<\/p>\n<p>Then I tried sowing them directly in the greenhouse (which is much cooler). You can safely sow and plant them out much earlier. I sowed them in plastic pastry clamshell boxes, taped them shut, and buried the boxes straight into a snowdrift outside. When the snow finally melted in spring, I just moved the boxes to a cool spot.
