To avoid forgetting when to feed, pick one day of the week that is most convenient for you (for example, every Saturday) and do all your seedling feedings on that day.

CRITICAL RULE: If the soil in the cups is dry, you must FIRST water the plant with plain, clean water. Only after the soil is moist should you pour in the nutrient solution. This is especially crucial during the first month when the root system is tiny and very tender—fertilizer on dry roots will burn them.

We begin feeding the moment the very first true leaf appears.
* 1st Month: 1 gram of fertilizer per 1 Liter of water (approx. 1/4 tsp per quart). Give about 30 ml (1 oz) of solution per seedling.
* 2nd Month: Increase concentration to 2g per Liter (1/2 tsp per quart).
* 3rd Month: Increase to 3g per Liter (3/4 tsp per quart). As the roots grow, you obviously increase the volume of water they receive as well.

The golden rule is: Do no harm! It is always better to make the concentration weaker than recommended on the package. Don’t constantly switch fertilizer brands, don’t overwater, and understand why you are giving each element.

The Sequence: Calcium Nitrate -> Complex NPK

M

Meggi (Tatiana) 🌱 Member (510 posts)

What exactly should I be feeding them? A classic, highly effective feeding schedule consists of alternating between Calcium Nitrate and a balanced complex fertilizer (with micronutrients).

Here is how the sequence works:
It is best to apply Calcium Nitrate first. Calcium acts as a nutrient conductor; over 3-4 days, it prepares the plant’s cellular structure to receive and process food.

Then, 3-4 days later, we give a balanced complex fertilizer (where N-P-K elements are in equal proportions, plus micronutrients). This means the seedling will now have the ability to take exactly what it needs, and as much as it needs. Under favorable conditions, this absorption happens over the next 3-4 days, and you will see visible growth results in about 7-10 days.

But this doesn’t mean we should stop feeding or wait for the seedling to stall out. The next growth spurt will only happen in another 7-10 days if we provide food again. Keep the cycle going!

In the intervals between these main feedings, it is very beneficial to water the seedlings with Potassium Humate (or Kelp extract with micronutrients). Dilute it in warm water and add a little bit to your regular watering can. The water should look like the color of very, very weak yellow tea. Be careful—a high concentration can actually harm the plants.

M

Meggi (Tatiana) 🌱 Member (510 posts)

Lyuda, thank you so much!
