The name “Barkhatnye” simply means “Velvet”. Note that this is often confused with other fuzzy varieties like Blue Spruce or Peach, or with non-fuzzy varieties like Barkhatniy Sezon (Velvet Season).

🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate and late-season. Both the leaves (which are Potato Leaf/PL) and stems are heavily pubescent (fuzzy), giving the plant a stunning, silvery-blue or frosted appearance in the garden. Can easily reach 6 ft (1.8 m) outdoors.

🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Small to medium round tomatoes that ripen to a deep red. The fruits themselves are covered in peach-like fuzz.

👅 Flavor & Utility: The texture is highly polarizing. Some people love the novelty, while others hate the fuzzy skin, comparing it to “eating a wool mitten”. Flavor is debated—ranging from tart to very pleasant and sweet. Many growers end up using them exclusively for canning to avoid the fuzzy texture when eating fresh.

🍅 Grown this variety? Click here to add your own photos and review below!

D

Drosera (Svetlana) ⭐ Pro Grower (5,413 posts)

📍 Yekaterinburg, Russia (USDA Zone 3)

Indet, both the leaves and the fruits are fuzzy/velvety.
