Bury a thermometer 6–8 inches (15-20 cm) deep. Do not transplant until the soil is at least 59°F (15°C). Pro tip: A digital kitchen meat thermometer works perfectly for this!

🌱 The Mounding Trick: When planting out, create a mound (hill) of dirt and plant the cucumber on top. Mounds heat up much faster than flat ground. It also forces you to water around the base, keeping the fragile stem dry and preventing root rot (damping off).

🛍️ The “Grow Bag” Hack: To get an even earlier harvest, some growers plant cucumbers in 1-gallon (3-5L) black plastic pots with the bottoms cut out, or large plastic water bottles with holes punched in them. The black plastic absorbs solar heat and warms the roots instantly. Drawback: This restricts the root system, meaning you get cucumbers very early, but the plant will exhaust itself and die off sooner than a free-rooted plant.

🥒 Grow early cucumbers? Click here to share your greenhouse hacks below!

R

Rosinka (Natasha) ⭐ Pro Grower (5,105 posts)

📍 Kaluga Region, Russia (USDA Zone 4)

Hello Anya, where are you going to grow your early cucumbers? I definitely grow them in the greenhouse; it’s way too early to plant seedlings outdoors right now. I usually plant both tomatoes and cucumbers out around late April, strictly depending on the weather.

I bury a thermometer 6–8 inches (15-20 cm) deep in the garden bed, and I only plant when the soil warms up to at least 59°F (15°C).

I always plant my cucumbers on a dirt mound. By the time I plant them, they are already about 20 inches (50 cm) tall (they always look a bit frail indoors but bounce back instantly in the greenhouse). I use the mounding technique because the elevated soil heats up much faster in the sun. Also, cucumbers hate being watered directly at the stem—planting on a mound forces the water to drain away, which protects them from root rot.

If a sudden cold snap hits, I run a space heater and cover them with frost cloth (agricover). Here is what they looked like on May 9th last year.

L

Lyudasik (Lyudmila) ⭐ Pro Grower (11,406 posts)

📍 Moscow Region, Russia (USDA Zone 4)

I want to mention Valery’s hack for getting an early harvest of peppers and cucumbers in the greenhouse when the soil is still too cold. I use a hole puncher to poke half-inch (1 cm) holes all over the sides and bottom.

At first, the jug just sits on top of the soil in the greenhouse while the plant grows. Later, once the ground finally warms up, I dig a hole and bury the whole jug in the dirt.

What are the results? I definitely get cucumbers much earlier than if I had just planted them straight into the dirt. HOWEVER, the bush does not end up being very productive in the long run. A cucumber’s root system wants to spread out like a spider web in all directions. The jug (or a grow bag) restricts the roots, so the plant ultimately ends up stunted/stressed.

It absolutely fulfills its purpose of giving you an ultra-early harvest, but I wouldn’t grow my main summer crop of cucumbers this way.

S

SvetaR (Svetlana) ⭐ Pro Grower (27,468 posts)

📍 Moscow Region, Russia (USDA Zone 4)

Russi: I bury a thermometer 6–8 inches (15-20 cm) deep in the garden bed…

Anna, do you have a photo of your thermometer?
