I like the variety, I plant several bushes. In 2020, among these bushes, one bush appeared with bi-color fruits. At first I thought I made a mistake. But looking closely, it became clear that the variety had segregated (mutated) and very successfully. The fruit shape and structure, plant habit, and the wide leaf were identical. And in 2021, it gave me another segregation—this time into dark/black fruits. The color is exactly like Black with a Beak from Borisovna. But thanks to its wide leaf, I don’t have to give it the most prime sunny spots in the greenhouse. Now I plant all three of these varieties and I love them very much. All three have that dense, delicious, marmalade-like flesh that I love. The smaller ones go into canning jars. They turn out firm, not fibrous.

I actually wrote to V.V. Redko about this variety. She replied that originally this variety was supposed to be a bi-color, but it grew pink for her. So she just named it Pink Grapefruit.

Edited January 23, 2024 by Irina

T

T@tk@ (Tatyana) ⭐ Pro Grower (34,928 posts)

📍 Kazan (USDA Zone 4)

@Irina wrote:
I have been planting Pink Grapefruit from Redko for many years… You’ll notice several growers complaining about getting solid red, pink, or even dark/black tomatoes from seeds labeled “Grapefruit”. In the gardening world, this is called an off-type.
This happens for two main reasons: either a simple accidental cross-pollination by a bee in the seed grower’s garden, or genetic segregation (where a supposedly stable heirloom suddenly reverts to the traits of one of its ancient parent plants).
As user Irina points out at the end of the thread, this isn’t always a bad thing! A Russian seed seller noticed her bi-color Grapefruit mutated into a solid pink tomato with the exact same amazing flavor and leaf type. She stabilized it, named it “Pink Grapefruit”, and it became a hit. Then, it mutated again into a dark/black tomato!
