Here is what you need to know:

The Insecticide Used: Natalia suggests Fitoverm, a highly popular organic pesticide in Eastern Europe based on Avermectin. In the US, the closest equivalent organic spray for thrips is Spinosad (found in brands like Captain Jack’s Dead Bug Brew) or Pyrethrin.

Safety and PHI: Ludmila is worried about kids eating the berries. When using any spray (even organic Spinosad), you must check the label for the PHI (Pre-Harvest Interval). This tells you exactly how many days you must wait between spraying and eating the fruit. For Spinosad on strawberries, the PHI is usually 1 day, making it safe for mid-harvest suppression if washed properly.

The Misdiagnosis: Ludmila makes a brilliant point at the end. Thrips usually cause the strawberry blossoms to drop or the fruit to turn bronzed and cracked. If the fruit is turning brown, leathery, and drying up entirely, it is often Leather Rot or another fungal disease, not an insect!

🇺🇸 What is your strategy? Are you “Team Ludmila” (never spray during harvest) or “Team Natalia” (use organics to save the crop)?
