Mid-late season, tall, reaching up to 8 feet (2.5m). Among our late-season tomatoes, this one takes first place for flavor, it has a very pronounced sweet and tart taste.

Under cover, it keeps producing right down to the lowest temperatures above freezing. We always plant 2 bushes of the Yellow, and this year we did 2 of the Gold as well. The kids love them, they eat everything straight off the vine. We gave a seedling of this variety to some friends; their daughter tasted a bunch of tomatoes with our kids and chose only this variety, so now in the fall that’s all they talk about. They saved seeds from it.

For comparison, only De Barao Red tastes similar to this. The Giant and Tsarsky (Royal) versions are completely different. We haven’t tried the Orange or Pink versions yet. Fruit weight is 1.4-1.6 oz (40-45g). For flavor I give it 5.5 points, the highest rating. There is probably no difference between these two strains, on the left is De B. Gold, on the right is Yellow. Both are delicious, tall, and the color is identical.

I

ilja (Ilya) ⭐ Grower (758 posts)

📍 Klin District, Moscow Region, Russia (USDA Zone 4)

I got my seeds for De Barao Gold in the second half of March, so I ended up sowing them pretty late. De Barao Gold (that’s what was written on the packet) is my absolute favorite, I’ve been growing it for years. The variety is totally bulletproof, every single year it throws a super yield, doesn’t mind the cold or being shaded out. Flavor-wise they really are the best: firm, meaty, sweet, great for snacking off the vine, tossing in salads, or canning. We eat them from July until the very last tomato. They have an incredible shelf life; in October, these are the only ones I pick green to ripen indoors (starting this year I added De Barao Tsarsky to that list), and they sometimes last all the way until New Year’s.

A

Ariya (Mariya) ⭐ Pro Grower (2,767 posts)

📍 Northern Nizhny Novgorod Region, Russia (USDA Zone 3/4)

I have two different versions of this variety: one is De Barao Gold from Sedek, the other is De Barao Yellow Primorsky (working title, someone sent it to me from the Primorsky Territory). In the tomato world, this is called “blinding off” or terminating.

While determinate tomatoes are genetically programmed to stop growing at a certain height, indeterminates should theoretically grow forever. If an indeterminate suddenly blinds off, it is almost always caused by extreme environmental stress during its early vegetative stage. Ilya mentioned he started his seeds late and planted them in a “freshly prepped” bed. Planting into raw, uncomposted soil (which is often too “hot” with nitrogen or physically dense) combined with transplant shock can traumatize the root system. The plant panics, abandons its vertical growth, and puts 100% of its remaining energy into ripening whatever fruit it has already set to ensure its seeds survive!

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): De Barao Gold / Yellow 🌍 Origin: Part of the legendary Russian “De Barao” family.
