If you grow a lot of anthocyanin (blue/black) tomatoes, you’ll notice many of them look strikingly similar to each other!

The anthocyanin pigment in tomatoes is highly light-sensitive. It only develops on the parts of the fruit’s skin that are directly exposed to UV rays from the sun. Because most beefsteaks hang downwards, the sun naturally beats down on their “shoulders”, creating that signature dark purple/black crown while the bottom half ripens to its natural base color (in this case, pearlescent pink). Because this UV reaction is so dominant, many pink-base antho varieties end up looking like identical twins until you actually taste them! To get the darkest, most dramatic shoulders on your Scotsdale Road tomatoes, make sure to prune away any leaves shading the fruit trusses.

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Scotsdale Road 🌍 Origin: A stunning novelty anthocyanin (blue/black) variety.
