If your Mays are hot, you absolutely need heat-tolerant hybrids.

Starts grown in their own individual cups/plugs.

Pest treatment before you transplant them out.

The planting hole needs to be heavily amended (compost, a balanced granular fert, and wood ash).

Heavy feeding for the first 6 weeks. Alternate nitrogen and balanced NPK so the plant pushes about 2 new leaves every single week.

Steady watering – not soaking wet, but frequent enough to keep it constantly moist.

The end goal: You shouldn’t have a little plant, but a monster bush. It needs to be about 20 inches (50 cm) tall and just as wide, with at least 14 to 16 leaves. (Mine got even bigger than that this year).

If you checked all those boxes, then the only culprit left is that crazy heat we had in May.

If there is no embryo of a head forming in the center, you need to cut off that spot and force the plant to push out side shoots. The “Blind” Broccoli (Heat Stress):
Broccoli is a cool-season brassica. If young plants are hit by prolonged high temperatures (above 80°F / 27°C) before they mature enough to form a crown, they can go “blind.” The heat damages the central apical bud, and it stops developing. As LavandaN noted, the heads often magically appear once a cool rain front moves in. If your broccoli goes blind, Ludmila’s advice is spot on: chop the top center out! This breaks apical dominance and tells the plant to push out side-shoots (florets).

2. The Community Flat Mistake:
Tatka noted she grew her seeds in a community flat (a large, open tray) rather than individual cell plugs. Broccoli roots absolutely hate being disturbed. Pulling them apart from a community flat causes transplant shock. The plant responds by delaying head formation or producing tiny, premature “button” heads. Always start your brassicas in individual plug trays!

📌 Quick Summary: “All Leaves, No Crown” 🌡️ The Heat Factor: Broccoli is notorious for refusing to head up during sudden heatwaves.
