The name translates to “Heat of Burning Coals” or simply “Glowing Coals”. (Note: Do not confuse with “Zhar-Ugli” by Siberian Garden, which is a purple anthocyanin variety).

🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), but growth height varies greatly by region. Outdoors it can stay around 3.6-5 ft (1.1-1.5 m), but in a greenhouse, it easily reaches 6.5 ft (2 m).

🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large, bright red, oblate beefsteaks. Average weight is around 7-12 oz (200-350 g). The skin is relatively thin, which makes them tender but prone to splitting in heavy rain.

👅 Flavor: The classic “old-fashioned” tomato taste. It is sweet, juicy, and very meaty, with a pleasant, slight acidic tang.

⚠️ Grower Warnings: Prone to fruit cracking (splitting) if watered inconsistently or after heavy rains. Can also suffer from blossom drop during extreme heat waves.

🍅 Grown this variety? Click here to add your own photos and review below!

D

Drakonka (Tamara) ⭐ Pro Grower (2,544 posts)

📍 Unknown

Zhar – Goryashchie Ugli. The variety discussed here is a classic, large red beefsteak heirloom. However, the commercial seed company Siberian Garden (SibSad) sells a completely different, genetically distinct variety called “Zhar-Ugli” (Glowing Coals). SibSad’s version is an anthocyanin (purple-shouldered) novelty tomato. If you are trading seeds, make sure you know which one you have!

Blossom Drop in Heat: Several growers noted that this variety can drop its blossoms during intense summer heat waves. When temperatures exceed 90°F (32°C) during the day or fail to drop below 70°F (21°C) at night, tomato pollen becomes sterile. The plant aborts the unpollinated flowers, causing a gap in the harvest.

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Zhar Goryashchie Ugli (Heat of Burning Coals) 🌍 Origin: A Russian heirloom variety.
