Pepper&#8217;s<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\ud83c\udf0d <strong>Origin:<\/strong> A highly famous anthocyanin (blue\/purple) cross bred in the USA (by Jason Haynes). It is named after the iconic Beatles album.<\/li>\n<li>\ud83c\udf3f <strong>Plant Habit:<\/strong> Indeterminate. This variety is famous for its extremely &#8220;wispy&#8221;, slender, and weeping foliage. In the seedling stage and in the garden, it looks incredibly frail and skinny (many growers joke it looks &#8220;half-dead&#8221; or like a &#8220;skinny young soldier&#8221;), but this is completely normal for this genetic line. It sets fruit well but requires good staking.<\/li>\n<li>\ud83c\udf45 <strong>Fruit Characteristics:<\/strong> Beautiful heart-shaped fruits (oxhearts), often ending in a sharp point or &#8220;beak.&#8221; They feature a pinkish-raspberry base heavily splashed with dark blue\/purple anthocyanin on the shoulders. Weights usually range from 150g to 300g+. <em>Note:<\/em> Because the variety was released somewhat early, there is a known &#8220;Pink&#8221; line (without blue shoulders) floating around in seed circles.<\/li>\n<li>\ud83d\udc45 <strong>Flavor Profile:<\/strong> Highly debated and heavily dependent on climate! In sunny, warm regions (or with high potassium), it develops a rich, sweet, caramel-like flavor with a hint of citrus. In cold, cloudy, or excessively rainy conditions, it can turn out bland, watery, or overly sour.<\/li>\n<li>\ud83e\udd6b <strong>Usage:<\/strong> Stunning on a fresh platter. Growers also note that its dark flesh makes incredibly beautiful, dark-crimson sauces and pastes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"forum-post\">\n<div class=\"author-header\">\n<div class=\"forum-avatar\">K<\/div>\n<div class=\"author-meta\">\n<div class=\"author-name\">Krasnaya Shapka (Alena) <span class=\"author-stats\">\ud83c\udf31 Member (719 posts)<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"author-geo\">\ud83d\udccd Novgorod Region, Russia (USDA Zone 4)<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-content\">\n<p>I got seeds from three different sources just to be absolutely sure I grew the real thing:<br \/>\nBunny Hop Seeds<br \/>\nMuddy Bucket Farm<br \/>\nValdis Pulins (a private collector from Latvia).<\/p>\n<p>The seedlings were wonderfully sturdy. But after planting them out, like many others this summer, they got hit with stress from a mix of constant cold, heavy rains, and a long lack of sun. They all survived, but the first flowers suffered and dropped off.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, the bushes grew over 2 meters (6.5 ft) tall! Skinny. The foliage is dark and very thin, the stems on the trusses are long&#8230; basically, you just want to hug them and cry \ud83d\ude04<\/p>\n<p>The trusses have the potential for up to 10 fruits, but I got a maximum of 5 tomatoes per truss. Where there were three, they all weighed 160-170 grams (5.6-6 oz). The smallest fruits were 100-120 grams (3.5-4.2 oz). So under normal conditions, it&#8217;s very realistic to get about 5 kg (11 lbs) or more per bush. The potential is there!<\/p>\n<p>I liked the variety very much, except for the unexpectedly super-slender structure of the whole plant. You basically have to weave macram\u00e9 to tie it up properly.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t push out too many suckers, it immediately split into a fork; in a greenhouse, you can grow it in 2-3 stems. Ripening time &#8211; mid-season.<br \/>\nOutside and inside, of course, it&#8217;s a beauty! It really has violet-burgundy splashes here and there. I wouldn&#8217;t say the bushes make you want to &#8220;hug and cry&#8221;; they are quite slender, but compared to <em>Vater Rhein<\/em>, they are sturdier. Maybe because I put compost and a little horse manure in the planting holes? The yield is impressive, although in the heat (over +30\u00b0C \/ 86\u00b0F) they stalled with fruit setting; this variety definitely prefers more moderate weather. But the yield potential is veeery high. My trusses had 5-7 medium-weight tomatoes (100-170 g, the largest tomato was 330 g \/ 11.6 oz).<\/p>\n<p>From the German source, the first fruits turned out to be pink, but when the nights became cold (+8 to +12\u00b0C \/ 46-53\u00b0F) and I trimmed all the lower leaves, blue shoulders started to appear (not on all bushes). But not all bushes showed anthocyanin; some remained entirely pink. The genetic line is apparently still not completely stable.<\/p>\n<p>On the Florida version, there was quite a lot of anthocyanin on the fruits right from the start, even in the shade.<\/p>\n<p>But I was out of luck with the taste this year. Despite feeding them with ash, organic ferments, and other organic fertilizers, having dolomite and calcium supplements in the soil, and mulching with cut grass, they turned out terribly sour. I don&#8217;t know where I made a mistake in my growing technique, but it is what it is. According to reviews from other people to whom I sent seeds from these exact same sources, the taste turned out good and sweet. Perhaps the weather affected the taste: very hot days and cold nights.<\/p>\n<p>Conclusion: incredibly stunning in beauty, yield in my conditions is good. I grew them in two stems and I think that&#8217;s the ideal for this variety. 6-9 trusses per bush in my conditions is a good indicator. Outdoors they are behaving well both in full sun and in dense plantings, although the yield is smaller in the shade. Let&#8217;s see how they survive the rains and fogs. But I had no luck with the taste. I want to try repeating it from another source, or tweak my agrotechnics. It didn&#8217;t happen on purpose, circumstances just aligned that way.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the thinness of the plants &#8211; proper sun only came out for me at the end of July, so a lot of my tomato population this year is a bit leggy.<\/p>\n<p>The stems on the Sergeant are sturdier, somewhat springy, not to the point of fainting if you compare them to <em>Vater Rhein<\/em>, but they are thin.<\/p>\n<p>The soil is different in all the greenhouses; you can feed them all the manure and potassium you want, but the taste won&#8217;t be identical. But they still turned out sweet\u2014some more, some less. I reported on the bushes that grew in the coziest spot.<\/p>\n<p>And all of them had anthocyanin right away. My nights only warmed up around August 10th; before that, it was +10 to +12\u00b0C (50-53\u00b0F) at best. And when I skipped a day, Blossom End Rot (BER) immediately appeared. The sun was just too scorching, and the nights were cold for tomatoes with sharp temperature drops. The daytime heat will subside soon, and there won&#8217;t be such sharp drops, I&#8217;ll see how that affects the taste. But next year I will try to give them a different soil mix based on banana peels.<\/p>\n<p>But I forgot to mention: this variety behaves excellently in a pot! I grew it in a 15-liter (4 gallon) pot, if anyone wants to take note. Although in the heat I sometimes had to water it twice a day.<\/p>\n<p>P.S. Pepper&#8217;s has good potential!<\/p>\n<p>I shaped the plants mainly into 3-4 stems, which suited me fine &#8211; the soil preparation before planting was quite substantial &#8211; rabbit bedding, ash&#8230; and during the growing process, naturally, additional feedings.<br \/>\nNow, at the beginning of September, the plants are right under the greenhouse roof and trusses with small, blue hearts are still hanging&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The ripe fruits are, of course, a sight to behold!!! First, blue-violet shoulders and longitudinal stripes appeared on the fruits, then the anthocyanin pigmentation intensified and &#8220;spread&#8221; over the entire fruit, mostly on the sunny side&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Delicious, juicy, a perfect balance of acidity and sweetness. Simply the find of this season!!!<br \/>\nYou can forgive this handsome guy for anything! A huge thanks to them. I don&#8217;t see a big difference. At first, the bushes seemed a bit different in height. But then they evened out, in taste, color, and yield. Right now, the ones on the smaller bush are ripening a bit later. There is no difference in taste, bush structure, or yield. The bushes actually turned out a little sturdier than standard oxhearts. Unusually sweet and beautiful fruits. The yield was also pleasing, despite the weather. It was one of the most beautiful, delicious, and productive varieties of the past season. Seeds were from one source: Bunny Hop. I acquired two versions. I planted three bushes of the Blue Sergeant. Two grew in different greenhouses, one bush outdoors.<\/p>\n<p>For me, it was quite early. The bushes are tall, but I wouldn&#8217;t say they are sturdy and powerful, more like slender\/wispy. It was one of the first to start setting fruit in the greenhouse. The fruiting period is prolonged; I picked the last fruits in October, both in the greenhouse and outdoors. I shaped it into 4 stems, and the fruits were 150-300g (5-10.5 oz), the largest being 370g (13 oz). The flesh is buttery, perfectly balanced, with a pronounced sweetness.<\/p>\n<p>The taste did not change all season. The color changed; with the colder weather, the fruits became completely blue, but they were just as tasty. I planted it and admired it all summer! Extraordinary yield from both the Blue heart and its pink version\u2014the Pink heart!<\/p>\n<p>The Blue heart (BHS) fruit weight is 200-300 g (7-10.5 oz), the Pink heart (MBF) weight is 200 g, the fruits are almost all uniform, firm, pink hearts that store quite well\u2014which is a rarity for pink-fruited varieties! 3 sources: Bunny Hop, Germany, and from a French collector. The fruits were slightly different: the American ones were large glossy hearts, from the Frenchman they were more matte, slightly smaller in size, but the taste was amazing, and they turned out to be earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The variety from all sources ripened fully in the greenhouse right up to the crown; we picked the last ones in September. Very meaty, unusually sweet, absolute delight. A MUST PLANT! Sergeant has larger fruits and is more abundant. The heart-shaped fruits look very beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>Relatively less foliage, which is pleasing, although Jewel isn&#8217;t overly leafy either. I like generative type tomatoes with a thinner bush and less green mass compared to the fruits. I always rejoice at such varieties. Their efficiency is higher, they take less nutrients from the soil, need less feeding and watering for the same yield output.<\/p>\n<p>This year both varieties ripened at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>Amethyst Jewel, even with my infrequent watering twice a month, cracks a little when ripening. Sergeant has fewer cracks.<\/p>\n<p>Both varieties ripen equally slowly, slower than pink and yellow varieties. They need to hang a little longer to gain flavor.<\/p>\n<p>If the color of the fruit in the cross-section of AJ is smoky-pink &#8211; the taste hasn&#8217;t developed. If the cut is pink &#8211; then that&#8217;s what we need, fully revealed. In this case, it&#8217;s a very tasty tomato. With a special spicy aftertaste, sweet with a pleasant balance of acid.<\/p>\n<p>I cut a piece of each and compared the taste. Sergeant is blander, the flesh is softer, darker, burgundy. The seedlings stretched out a bit, so I planted them deep, which is why the first trusses ended up almost on the ground. I had to put little wooden boards under them. When fully ripe, the taste is harmonious, sweet, yield outdoors is average. Amethyst Jewel, under the same conditions, wins in taste, yield, and duration of fruiting. I take my hat off to the creators of this variety \ud83c\udfa9 \ud83d\ude0a<br \/>\nJust a very beautiful tomato shape combined with a dark purple color creates the impression not just of a food product, but rather a masterpiece of breeding art. It&#8217;s beautiful &#8211; there&#8217;s no denying it. Other parameters &#8211; about the same as everyone else who grew it. The bush is quite &#8220;frail&#8221; both as a seedling and in the greenhouse. The variety is not early, fruiting and ripening are prolonged. In September, some of the tomatoes were taken in to ripen indoors. The taste was quite satisfactory, because the bushes got the sunniest spots. Yield is worse than &#8220;heart classics&#8221;, but better than other &#8220;anthocyanins&#8221;. The bushes grew in different places &#8211; in the greenhouse and outdoors, on a raised bed. Pepper&#8217;s. As a seedling it wasn&#8217;t very frail, but in the greenhouse it became completely weak and frail, heavy feeding didn&#8217;t help it, it split into 4 stems and didn&#8217;t even grow suckers. It grew very large, sprawling trusses and set a bunch of fruits, which practically didn&#8217;t grow at all. A few reached 100 g, and the rest were cocktail size. Both varieties are identical to each other in bush structure, fruit shape\/size, and taste. The only difference was productivity in favor of Sergeant.<\/p>\n<p>I planted two bushes of Sgt. Pepper, maintained both in 2 stems. It can easily be done in 4, but I planted 2 in one hole. The variety showed itself as mid-season for me. It set fruit well. But the taste didn&#8217;t impress, it turned out bland-sour or just bland. Magic grew nearby and was exactly the same in taste. I definitely won&#8217;t repeat it next year, I&#8217;ll try Kas 21, and after that maybe I&#8217;ll recheck it once more just to be sure. For me, taste is more important than beauty, and there are so many other varieties I want to try!
