It was bred from several varieties, including Evergreen.

🌿 Plant Habit: Originally released as a determinate (bush) variety, but years of seed saving and minor genetic drifts have resulted in both determinate and indeterminate strains circulating in the heirloom community.

🍅 Fruit Characteristics: GWR cherry tomatoes weighing about 1 oz (25-30 g). Important Note: There is significant segregation in the seed market regarding shape. I was so excited for it. I literally registered on this forum just to read about it!))) And then it did this…

First of all, it was gigantic. It shot way past 5 ft (1.5 meters) in the open ground, I had to look up at its growing tips… It threw out a sea of suckers. I got tired of fighting them, and by August they had won, I just ended up tying them all to the main stem with rope. It hated the heat. It REALLY hated the heat: it wilted, got sunscald, and dropped its leaves. It suffered from severe nitrogen toxicity (all leaf, no fruit). I have no idea how a plant can get nitrogen toxicity for three months straight when planted at an ultra-dense spacing (6 inches / 15 cm between roots!), but it did. It pushed out 12-inch massive leaves, a main stem as thick as two fingers, the whole nine yards. I had a second bush in another bed with much more space, where I deliberately didn’t prune it at all. It grew into a sprawling, shorter little monster. But it STILL looked like it was suffering from too much nitrogen.

Secondly, the yield was terrible. The clusters had about 8-10 fruits. That’s the kind of cluster size you expect from 3 oz (80-100 g) tomatoes, a nice neat bunch… but instead, I just got these little “pimples” on the truss. The tomato sizes ranged from medium round cherries (20-30 g) to hefty little barrels (40 g). And on top of that, they cracked. Cherries! Cracking!

This variety could honestly be used as an illustration for every horror story about growing cherry tomatoes – a mountain of foliage and a handful of pathetic little fruits. You walk up to the garden bed, and this 6-foot monster is looming over you, hiding its rare, ten-berry clusters underneath its giant canopy.

And thirdly. It’s bitter. Legitimately bitter! When it was unripe, it was awful. When it got soft, it was slightly less bitter. It only turned sweet exactly once, after two weeks of brutal heat (but again, it supposedly hates the heat! 🤣). Then it went right back to being bitter. And neither the color change of the skin nor the softness of the fruit gave any indication of whether it had stopped being bitter yet.

Overall, from the description, you can tell this was a “conversation starter” novelty tomato for the garden))) It disliked me, and I “nagged” it the whole season))) God forbid I ever plant it again! It looks cute in the pictures, but don’t fall for that angelic appearance!

Y

yuliandr (Yulia) ⭐ User (731 posts)

📍 Chekhov, Moscow Region (USDA Zone 4)

This is my absolute favorite variety in terms of taste)) So incredibly delicious. Weight is 1 oz (25-30 g) and 1.4-1.6 inches (3.5-4 cm) in diameter. Grown in clusters of 8-15 fruits. Cute golden speckles appear on the skin of fully ripened fruits.
