It is a spectacular potato-leaf cross between Paul Robeson and Green Giant.

🌿 Plant Habit: Compact indeterminate. It is not a true dwarf, but it rarely exceeds 5 feet (1.5 m) and has very sturdy potato-leaf foliage. Excellent for both open ground and greenhouses.

🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large, oblate beefsteaks weighing around 7-12 oz (200-350 g). The skin stays green but develops a beautiful amber/yellowish blush when fully ripe.

👅 Flavor: Absolutely top-tier. Sweet, perfectly balanced, and slightly fruity with a unique hint of creaminess.

💡 Standout feature: Unlike most green-when-ripe tomatoes, these actually have a decent shelf life and don’t turn into a puddle of mush immediately after picking!

🍅 Grown this variety? Click here to add your own photos and review below!

E

ElenaN (Elena) ⭐ Pro Grower (28,513 posts)

📍 Kostroma (USDA Zone 3-4)

This variety could also be translated as “Mr. Grub’s Green Mystery”, but I’m just using the translation our local seed vendor provided to avoid confusing anyone.
It’s a mid-early indeterminate variety, very disease-resistant. The bush is sprawling but not overly tall, with large potato leaves. High yielder! I grew it outdoors in open ground, it reached about 3 feet (0.9 m) tall and set fruit on every single truss. The fruits are large green-amber beefsteaks, very tasty and sweet. When overripe, they get a slightly orange tint. But even if they get overripe, they hold their quality and flavor for a long time. If you compare it to Malachite Box: Malachite grows taller and the fruits are a bit sweeter and more tender, but they have basically zero shelf life.

B

Borisych (Evgeny) 🌱 Beginner Grower (17 posts)

ElenaN (Elena) said:
It’s a mid-early indeterminate variety… reached about 3 feet (0.9 m) tall 👍

Elena, are you sure this is an indeterminate variety? 3 feet is typical for determinate plants.

E

ElenaN (Elena) ⭐ Pro Grower (28,513 posts)

Borisych (Evgeny) said:
Elena, are you sure this is an indeterminate variety? 3 feet is typical for determinate plants.

Evgeny, when I grow outdoors, a lot of my tall indeterminate varieties never push past 3 feet.
Tatiana’s TOMATObase also lists it as an indeterminate, just a compact one.

L

Lana_s_Kavkaza (Svetlana) ⭐ Pro Grower (19,268 posts)

📍 Pyatigorsk (USDA Zone 7)

I liked this variety. This was my first year growing it.

R

rrubik (Elena) 🌱 Vegetable Geek (121 posts)

Has remained a favorite of mine for many years.

👨‍🌾 Editor’s Note: The Hilarious Translation Error Behind “The Larva”
If you’re wondering why several growers in this thread jokingly refer to this tomato as a “Larva”, it’s because of a legendary lost-in-translation moment!

When Russian seed vendors first imported Grub’s Mystery Green, they didn’t realize that “Grub” was the breeder’s (David Lockwood’s) nickname.
