The bushy plant grows up to 31 inches (80 cm). Nepas 14 (the non-pruning sugar type) can be pruned as needed—moderately, or not pruned at all. The flat-round fruits weigh 3-3.5 oz (80-100 g) each. Variety #14 is known for excellent taste and resistance to adverse environmental conditions.

Variety features:
Because it produces fewer suckers, the bush gets better airflow: thanks to the structure of the stems, this indoor/outdoor plant doesn’t get sick with late blight. Bushes grow up to 27 inches (70 cm) in height. Seedlings are planted out in early spring—Nepas is completely unfussy about maintenance and outdoor temperature swings. The bushes are tied to hoops in the garden, or supported at the base if grown in raised boxes. Its compact nature lets you increase your yield without expanding your garden beds. The description states the fruits are great for winter canning or making homemade tomato paste. The yield for all varieties in the Nepas series is 11-13 lbs/sq m (5-6 kg/sq m).”

———-

I can add from my own experience: in 2018, I planted 6 Nepas 14 bushes out in the dirt. I covered the bed with spunbond row cover and completely forgot about them until mid-July. I didn’t prune them. Didn’t water them. Didn’t weed them. In August, I harvested 2 crates of tomatoes, and they kept fruiting until September 17th. The only reason they stopped on September 17th is because I had to pack up and close out my summer cabin season.

Before leaving the cabin on September 17th, I sowed some Nepas 14 seeds directly into the dirt in the greenhouse. When I came back the following spring, on May 12th, I finally remembered my little experiment and was shocked to find a whole cluster of pretty large seedlings (see photo). When I saw my fall-sown babies, I also found 6 sprouted zucchini plants and 3 groundcherries as a bonus.

After a little while, those little tomatoes caught up to and completely outgrew their relatives that I had carefully grown on my windowsill. They flowered first. They gave a gorgeous harvest. They didn’t get sick with late blight at all, even though I only sprayed for blight exactly once all season. The plants felt absolutely fantastic even at the end of October; they were covered in new green flowering suckers and tiny tomatoes that popped up after the main harvest was done… I almost felt bad ripping them out of the bed!

By the way, I also fall-sowed some seeds in an uncovered outdoor bed last year, and they sprouted too. Naturally, they came up later and were much smaller than the greenhouse ones.

This year, on the day I closed out the summer season, I did the exact same thing: I sowed tomato seeds. We’ll see what comes up in the spring.

Edited November 19, 2019 by Marina7

I

Inna5867 (Inna) ⭐ Pro Grower (3,135 posts)

📍 Saratov Oblast, Russia (USDA Zone 4-5)

My friend has a summer cabin, and she only visits and waters her garden once a week.
