Because it’s an unstable dehybridization, growers report two main shapes: one with a distinct pointy beak, and one with a dimpled blossom end. The vines are famously wispy but produce massive, complex trusses of sweet, gummy, bright red elongated tomatoes. While the yields can be staggering, the variety is notorious for being highly susceptible to BER (blossom end rot) and requiring a long, warm season to fully ripen. Full summary ↓

Jump to: The Corianne F1 Origin Story | Battling BER

Growers’ Notes and Photos (USDA Zones 2-6 Experience)

G

Galya-64 (Galina) ⭐ Pro Grower (4,414 posts)

Figured I’d start a thread on this tomato since I’m getting a ton of questions 👋 I think everyone saw that one viral photo from another forum (sadly I don’t have the link, if anyone saved it, please post it). As you’ve probably figured out and as we’ve discussed here, Flashentomat isn’t exactly a variety name, but rather a group these types of tomatoes belong to. There’s a thread about it somewhere (Alexander, please chime in, you explained it to us).

That’s why mine has a little beak, whereas I saw photos of Angelina’s and hers have a dimple on the blossom end, and hers looked bigger to me, but that’s natural… I was gifted 2 seeds from a German forum, treated them like absolute gold, but still couldn’t protect them properly. They got hit by frost, bounced back from the suckers, I left 4 suckers on it, so my fruits were pretty small and obviously didn’t hit their full yield potential. I just saw them as large cherries.

But even then, the yield on these things blew me away! I’m definitely giving them another try. Taste is nothing special, pretty standard, not overly sweet, but the crazy weather swings might have played a role there. Gotta give them credit though, they store incredibly well. Here they are in my hand, just took the photo, they are about 2.5 inches (6-7 cm) long. Got battered by hail in August, which is why they have spots, but they are all ripening on the counter, not a single one rotted or got sick. Long story short: frozen, hail-beaten, they’ve been sitting on the counter for 3 weeks since I picked them and they’re doing just fine 😄

These are the bottom trusses on the vine:
This is what I gathered from the remaining top trusses.
And here’s a photo from today.

Edited January 29, 2016 by Drosera

Z

Zulfiya ⭐ Pro Grower (15,967 posts)

📍 Ufa (USDA Zone 3)

Galina! There’s a thread about it somewhere (Alexander, please chime in, you explained it to us)

Galina, folks on the forum were actually talking about this German classification here long before I joined. Flaschentomaten literally means Bottle Tomatoes, it’s a group of varieties with elongated, often hollow fruits that are less juicy and have higher dry matter content. They’re used in cooking because you don’t have to boil them down forever. Think San Marzano, De Barao, Amish Paste, and various plum and pepper shapes.

Valera Zonn got this particular tomato by growing out a German hybrid called Corianne F1 (a San Marzano type). He found that some of his plants ended up yielding heavier and producing larger fruits than the original Corianne F1, which throws fruits about 1.5 inches (4 cm) long with a dimple on the end. For some reason, he just slapped this generic group name on it. When I asked him what generation it was (F2, F3, F4, F6?), he dodged the question. Guessing it was probably only an F3.

Galina, you got lucky that your plant turned out so productive. The variety clearly hasn’t stabilized yet, which is why your fruits have that pointy beak. Several ladies on another forum grew it out from Valera’s seeds too, but were totally disappointed — small, poor yields, bad BER. The original Corianne F1, grown side by side, outperformed it.

You definitely need to save and share seeds from that specific plant.

M

Mila (Lyudmila) ⭐ Pro Grower (8,507 posts)

📍 Moscow Region (USDA Zone 4)

I also grew out seeds from Valera in Germany 👍 Super interesting variety, survived all the frosts and still managed to push out great trusses in our short summer season 📝 Yeah, saw a little BER, but just isolated cases, didn’t really put a dent in the overall harvest 😳. Kept plucking about 10-15% of the little “black-nosed” fruits out of the trusses right till the end. The clusters filled out and colored up unevenly and very slowly, and the fruits turned kinda transparent. Also a potassium deficiency? Or is that just a variety trait? Ran it to 1 leader and the fruits were bigger, 2 leaders they were smaller, obviously. Sweet taste, but the skin is a bit too tough for fresh eating. Haven’t tried canning them yet. They store forever, don’t spoil, and basically sun-dry themselves. Ripened off the vine from green decently well. Wondering if I should try it one more time? Despite looking frail as a seedling, it is highly vigorous and grows easily to 5-7 ft (1.5-2.2 m). There are two distinct lines circulating under this name: one producing pointy, beak-tipped fruits, and another with blunt or dimpled blossom ends.

📈 Yield: Exceptionally high. Under the right conditions, it pumps out massive, complex clusters of small (1-1.5 oz / 25-45g) to medium (5 oz / 150g) red elongated paste/cherry tomatoes. However, it requires a long season and heat to ripen fully.

👅 Taste: Widely praised as incredibly sweet, like candy, with a dense, meaty, gummy/marmalade texture. The skin is somewhat thick, making it excellent for canning and sun-drying. It also contains very few seeds, which are unusually tiny.

📦 Storage: Superb.
