Early maturity, pale green foliage, with slender, graceful stems and delicate leaves. The fruits are more like finger-shaped or teardrop cherries, bright orange, firm, sweet, with thin but durable skin, weighing up to 0.7 oz (20 g). Trusses vary from simple long ropes to multi-branched mega-clusters depending on nutrition and cultural conditions.

Despite its delicate appearance, this plant loves to feed on nitrogen. Yet in three years of growing it, I have never once seen it go purely vegetative; instead, the trusses just become a total sight to behold! Not overly dependent on heavy potassium either, keeping its rich flavor through summer right into late autumn, though it can drop flowers in extreme heatwaves. Zero issues with blossom end rot, cracking, or leaf mold. It is still growing in my greenhouse right now, lush green, blooming, setting, and ripening. 👍

Edited March 31, 2017 by Pomidoroved

A

Agnija (Agniya) ⭐ Section Moderator (2,530 posts)

📍 Pskov Region, Russia (USDA Zone 4)

In Spanish, “naranja” is acting as an adjective here. Characterized by slender stems and delicate, light green, lacy foliage that casts very little shade. Seedlings indoors look thin and fragile, but explode into productive growth once warm weather arrives.

✂️ Pruning Strategy: Highly unconventional. Strict pruning to 1 or 2 stems drastically reduces its genetic potential. Experienced growers recommend letting the vine branch freely into 4 to 6+ leaders, bundling the slender stems together like a sheaf of wheat tied to a central stake and overhead trellis.

👅 Flavor Profile: Rated by multiple veteran growers as the sweetest cherry tomato in their gardening lives, rivaling or exceeding Summer Sun. Tiny teardrop-to-finger-shaped orange fruits (0.35-0.7 oz / 10-20 g) with springy, crisp skin that pops with pure honey-like juice. Holds intense sweetness even during cold, sunless, rain-soaked summers.

⚡ Nutrition & Disease Resistance: Heavy feeder with high nitrogen demands during fruit swell, but naturally resists excessive vegetative growth. Completely clean record against blossom end rot (BER), cracking, and leaf mold (cladosporium).

📦 Storage & Canning: Remarkable shelf life. Dead-ripe fruits store at room temperature for over a month, and green fruits picked in October ripen indoors and stay edible into February. Excellent for sweet whole-jar pickles.

🌎 Who Reviewed It: Extensively trialed across USDA Zones 3 through 7 and 11, including Western Siberia, the Urals, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Belarus, and the Canary Islands.

🍅 Have you grown Pera Naranja? Did you prune it or bundle it up like a wheat sheaf?
