Divo Divnoe (Wondrous Miracle) Tomato Review & Photos

Rate this

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Divo Divnoe (Wondrous Miracle)

  • 🌍 Origin: A highly regarded private collection heirloom variety, with early seeds tracing back to Ukraine and Bulgaria. The name “Divo Divnoe” roughly translates to “Wondrous Miracle” or “Marvelous Wonder” from Russian folk tales.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall). Produces strong, sturdy vines with dense foliage.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large, dark purple/burgundy beefsteaks with green shoulders. The shape is typically oblate (round and flattened), often with a slight dimple at the top. Weight averages 10.5-16 oz (300-450 g).
  • 👅 Flavor: Renowned for its rich, sweet, and complex dark tomato flavor with a distinct fruity aftertaste. Very juicy and meaty.
  • ⚠️ Grower Notes: A very early ripener for such a large dark beefsteak! However, it is extremely demanding when it comes to sunlight. It needs supplemental grow lights as a seedling and must be planted in the sunniest spot in the greenhouse, otherwise, it will act like a late-season variety.

A variety that deserves nothing but positive reviews! Originally from Bulgaria. It is a tall, densely foliated beauty with purple fruits. The tomatoes are large, weighing up to 14 oz (400 g), round, with juicy flesh and a wonderful fruity aroma. The variety is truly excellent!

In the photos is Divo Divnoe grown by Sergei Prazdnichnov. Sergei got his seeds from Yaroslavna (Natalya Pavlovna Dryzhakova).

Galochka, thank you!!! We even have the exact same fruit shape… perfectly oblate with that little dimple at the top 👍

I grew this variety in 2014, unfortunately, I can’t find my cross-section photos anywhere right now… But I definitely remember the taste—juicy, rich, with a light fruity aftertaste. The flesh is thick, dense, and noticeably sweet…

I grew it in the greenhouse; the plants were strong, tall, and quite productive. The fruiting period was extended, I pruned them to 2-3 stems in the greenhouse. Most of the fruits were large, 10.5-16 oz (300-450 g) and more… the color is beautiful—a deep purple, probably closer to burgundy 😄 My seeds were originally sent by a seed collector from Ukraine.

Thank you so much, Natalya Pavlovna. 🌸🌸🌸 This was the variety that made me truly start looking at the beauty of the tomato as a gem. Since then, many other varieties have warmed my heart. 😘😘😘 Even without experience, I dove headfirst into this wonderful kaleidoscope of living colors and flavors.

Back then, I didn’t know I would end up here, in this warm community of interesting people.

Thank you to all the guys and girls here for helping me master this fascinating science. 🌸🌸🌸

A deep bow to you, Natalya Pavlovna, for igniting our passion to trial new varieties, massive ones like this 😲😲😲 that you just can’t resist. And once again, we’re waiting for spring like it’s the first time. As one girl here said, this isn’t just a hobby, this is our life.

I planted Divo Divnoe this year. Sowed on March 20th, planted out in the open ground (under a tall 6.5 ft / 2m roof) on May 28th (our last frost was June 5th). Pruned to 2 stems, and topped the main growing points at around 5 ft (1.5 m). It produced 9 trusses and 55 fruits (I clearly got too greedy).

On September 1st, I harvested 23 fruits weighing 4.4 lbs (2 kg) total, so I’m hoping the bush will yield about 11 lbs (5 kg) altogether. But I wouldn’t have had to pick the rest green if my tomatoes weren’t a full month behind schedule in their development this year.

Pavel, what can you tell us about the taste? And if it’s not a secret, where did you get the seeds? I really loved the cross-section photos above, such thick fruit walls 👍! Can they store on the counter for a while? And I didn’t quite get the weight—what are you weighing them in? Is that 150g?

Irina, there was no pronounced flavor, just like the vast majority of varieties this year. I’m hoping they’ll show their true potential in 2018.

Those are just small digital scales with a decimal point, yes, that’s 150g.

The seeds were from Yaroslavna.

The shelf life of the ripe fruits is just average.

Grew in the poly greenhouse on the sunny side. Started ripening among the very first. The fruits are quite large. During the extreme heat, there were some greenish hard cores inside. Does it need extra Potassium too? The taste ranged from good to excellent.

Grew outdoors. Yield was average, but it compensated with its taste. It was one of the best among the 10 black heirlooms I grew—sweet, juicy, buttery, and the darkest in color).

Ladies, my Divo Divnoe is red. And both the photo and description on the seed packet say so, and it’s an imported packet too. I can’t find a photo to show you right now, I’ll keep looking.

It’s this one here: (link to a red tomato seed packet).

Mine is from Kulik’s collection—it’s a great black tomato. Yours is the Red Divo)))) Just like there’s a Black Monisto and a Pink Monisto.

What the heck, the official State Register actually lists it as a yellow-fruited variety! (Registered by the Aelita seed company in 2015).

Well, the version I grew (photos above) completely disappointed me. Both seasons I grew it, it was totally tasteless.

And it mostly just pushes out runts. This year my average weight was 3 oz (86g), with a max of 7.6 oz (216g).

For me, this is one of my absolute favorite varieties. I gift the seeds to my friends. It is one of the very first to ripen, extremely delicious, and very beautiful. At the time it starts ripening (late June to early July, from a mid-March sowing), there are simply no other tomatoes that taste this good yet. My whole family goes hunting for them in the greenhouse.

BUT, this variety is extremely demanding when it comes to lighting. If you don’t use supplemental grow lights for the seedlings, or if you plant it in a shaded spot in the center of the greenhouse, it will shift from being an early/mid-early to a mid/late-season variety.

This variety is the very first one to hit high sugar levels at the start of my season, and right now, it’s the last one finishing the season. It’s been on my “must-grow” list for several years now.

This year, when we had horribly cold and rainy weather all spring right up until mid-June, the only tomatoes we were eating starting from June 17th for about a month were Divo Divnoe and Lucid Gem. All my other varieties went on strike and absolutely refused to ripen in that bad weather.

Whose seeds are those? I really want to plant it, but I don’t want the tiny runts that Pavel ended up with 🤷‍♀️ Your tomato is an absolute beauty 👍

Good call. This variety is truly outstanding as an early cropper, but later on in the mid-season, 2-4 weeks later, there are plenty of other varieties that taste even better.

It will be perfectly fine, but supplemental grow lights are an absolute must: leave them on 24/7 for the first 3 days after germination, and then 13-14 hours a day after that. In the greenhouse, you cannot plant it in the center beds; it must go on the edge where it gets maximum sun. It is a very sunlight-demanding variety. But other than that, it’s excellent.

I am so glad to hear that Divo Divnoe is an excellent early variety! I have 1 seedling growing right now.

That’s a yellow-orange beefsteak. It just happens to share the same name as our forum’s beloved dark heirloom.

I grew that exact one (the yellow packet). I wasn’t impressed at all. It’s prone to pushing too much vegetative growth (all leaves, no fruit). The fruits crack from the sun, and the yield was totally disappointing.

👨‍🌾 Editor’s Notes:

  • Commercial Packets vs. Private Collections: In Russia, the commercial seed registry (State Register) and private seed collector networks often operate in completely different worlds. As mentioned in the thread, the official commercial packet for “Divo Divnoe” sold by companies like Aelita is a completely unrelated Yellow/Orange or Red tomato. The true, highly-coveted “Divo Divnoe” discussed by collectors here is the dark purple/black heirloom variety passed hand-to-hand from Ukraine and Bulgaria.
  • Light Demands: Natalya notes this variety is highly dependent on light. If started indoors without proper grow lights, or planted in a crowded/shaded greenhouse spot, it will revert from an early cropper into a late-season bloomer.
