Quick Summary of Alki Blue Blood

  • 🌍 Origin: Bred by the legendary American tomato breeder Tom Wagner and introduced around 2014. It has become very popular among Eastern European collectors (such as Ruslan Dukhov).
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate. When grown outdoors in open ground, it typically reaches about 1-1.2 m (3.3-4 ft). It is a low-maintenance plant that requires minimal pruning/suckering and successfully supports heavy fruit loads.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Small to medium-sized round tomatoes with striking blue/black anthocyanin shoulders and red bottoms. The average weight is around 100g (3.5 oz), though official descriptions claim they can reach up to 150g (5 oz).
  • 👅 Flavor: Rated as excellent. The fruits have a very good, classic sweet tomato taste that pairs well with their exotic looks.
  • Maturity & Yield: Mid-season. It is an extremely reliable producer with zero blossom drop, often noted by growers as one of the most productive varieties among all blue (anthocyanin) tomatoes.

The creator of the variety is Tom Wagner, a 2014 novelty. I liked the variety. It grew outdoors in open ground, and I barely pruned it (removed very few suckers). The bush successfully supported and ripened all the trusses, and there was no blossom drop whatsoever.

It was one of the most productive among the blue varieties. The weight of the fruits was up to 100g (3.5 oz), although it is claimed to be up to 150g (5 oz). Bush height is 1-1.2 m (3.3-4 ft). The taste is excellent.

A mid-season indeterminate variety. The fruits are not large, round, and have a very good taste. The yield is very good. Seeds were from Ruslan Dukhov.
