Krupnyi iz Khakasii (Large from Khakassia) Tomato Review & Photos

Share your rating

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Krupnyi iz Khakasii (Large from Khakassia) – Real  Siberian Heirloom.

  • 🌍 Origin: A beloved family heirloom from the Askizsky District of the Republic of Khakassia (Siberia, Russia). The name literally translates to “Large from Khakassia”. It was widely popularized among collectors by Lyudmila Gladilova from Kazakhstan.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall). Despite being an indeterminate, when grown outdoors in open ground, it tends to behave like a stocky “tree-type” plant, staying around 4 to 4.2 feet (1.2-1.3 m) without pushing an excessive amount of suckers.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Massive, uniform red beefsteaks that can reach up to 1.5 lbs (700 g). The flesh is incredibly dense with a slight pinkish tint inside and very tiny seed cavities.
  • 👅 Flavor: Top-tier classic tomato flavor. Growers consistently rate it as exceptionally sweet, juicy, and perfect for fresh slicing.

This variety made its way to me from Kazakhstan from Lyudmila Gladilova. As I understand it, the name is just a working name. But since it has already become famous on the forum, I decided to add it to the catalog. Here is Lyudmila’s description: “Large from Khakassia are my favorites. Unbelievable yield, taste gets a 10/10. It’s not just a plant, it’s a literal tree loaded with tomatoes))))) VEEEERY heavy yielder. A+ rating across all characteristics!!! and +++++ very tasty, sweet!!!”

It truly is a very vigorous, tall, and prolific variety. And insanely delicious! Really!

Here is my Large from Khakassia. A heavy yielder and a very tasty variety. The flesh has a pink tint, and the fruits got up to 1.5 lbs (700 g). Indeterminate, grew it in the greenhouse pruned to 2 stems.

Sveta, @Svetikk, I grew those bonus seeds you sent me this year, Large from Khakassia. It turned out to be a real workhorse, and all the fruits are uniform, smooth, pure red color. Right now there are little greenies sizing up after picking the ripe fruits. I have 8 on one plant and 5 on the other – maybe they’ll manage to ripen. I really liked it. Great tomatoey flavor, very juicy. Thanks!!!

This variety had a complicated journey before it reached us. The seeds were received by forum member @iraida from the Askizsky district of Khakassia (it’s a family heirloom). Irina shared the seeds with Lyudmila Gladilova-Filippova from Kazakhstan. We saw this beauty in Lyudmila’s videos. That’s exactly how the variety started spreading. I grew it for two seasons. Sent it out as a seed gift in a lot of swaps. Tasty, large, but my yield is average for now. The potential of the variety is great though! It really shines in greenhouses, well, I only grow outdoors in the dirt for now.

I grew it this year after getting seeds from Lyudmila Shevyachok. This isn’t just a tomato, it’s an absolute dream! A tall vigorous plant with massive, incredibly delicious fruits! Thanks to Lyudmila for this variety, it gets a permanent spot in my greenhouse!

Hey ladies, Lyuda Shevyachok, you have it outdoors. Is it very tall? Just a ballpark estimate?

What do you mean ballpark?! I remember it like it was yesterday. In open ground it was no taller than 4 to 4.2 feet (1.2-1.3 m). It doesn’t spread wide and doesn’t push a million suckers. I call these kinds of varieties a “little tree” to myself and I absolutely love them for that! (making a special note of it in my log)…

Thanks. That’s exactly what I needed to know.

Grew Large from Khakassia in 2018 in the greenhouse. I have to echo all the praise here. Liked it a lot! Tasty, heavy yielder. The tomatoes are seriously hefty. My seeds are also from Lyudmila Gladilova from Northern Kazakhstan.

The circle of seed life! I sent this exact variety to Vitaly back in 2018! I’m so glad you liked it! Didn’t plant it myself this year, but in 2021 I want to try it again, maybe even in the greenhouse this time.

A worthy variety, the flesh has really tiny seed cavities, I barely scraped out enough seeds. Last year I collected very few seeds from it. Excellent sweet taste, juicy, a perfect slicer tomato.

👨‍🌾 Editor’s Note: The Seed Train & Geography
This thread is a fantastic example of how heirlooms travel! The Republic of Khakassia is located deep in Southern Siberia. It has a harsh, short growing season, which means local family heirloom seeds are naturally selected for hardiness and early-to-mid season vigor. From Siberia, this seed made its way to a grower in Kazakhstan, then back to Russia through the forum’s underground “seed trains,” earning its permanent name along the way. When Shevyachok mentions the “circle of seed life”, she’s referring to the beautiful community habit of saving seeds and mailing them across the globe to keep rare genetics alive!
