Quick Summary of Magia Serbia (Serbian Magic)

  • 🌍 Origin: A very rare and visually stunning variety. Despite its name (which translates to Serbian Magic), it was reportedly sourced from Romania. Information about it online is very scarce.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate, but on the shorter side, usually growing up to 1.5 – 1.6m (5 ft). The bush is not aggressive or overly leafy, making it a very manageable, “well-behaved” plant. Performs well both in greenhouses and outdoors.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Medium-sized round beefsteaks weighing 150g (5.3 oz) and up. The coloring is spectacular: a deep terracotta base with faint pink stripes, topped with a dark purple/black anthocyanin “dusting” (moire) on the shoulders. ⚠️ Growing Tip: The intensity of the stripes and the dark anthocyanin cap depends entirely on sun exposure. The more direct sun it gets, the darker the top and the brighter the stripes.
  • 👅 Flavor: The flesh is deep raspberry colored, dense, and sweet. The gel around the seeds has a very pleasant, light tartness that balances the sweetness perfectly.

Information about this variety on the internet is very scarce. Mostly, everyone just writes the exact same thing.

The variety was obtained from Romania. Bush height up to 1.5m (5 ft). The fruits are round, dense, and have a dark terracotta color with faint pink stripes, and a dark moire (dusting) on the shoulders. A very spectacular coloring. The flesh is deep raspberry, dense, and sweet. Fruit weight is 150g (5.3 oz) and up. The coloring of the tomato changes depending on how much sun hits the fruits.

I grew it in 2022. It made it into my TOP-10 of that year. The bush is indeed not aggressive, and the taste of the tomatoes is very worthy. The coloring of the fruits heavily depends on the sun. And not just the color of the “cap”, as is the case with many anthocyanin varieties (the more sun, the darker the hat). In the sun, the stripes also appear brighter all over the body of the fruit.

Our Masha @Murka shared the seeds. Huge thanks!

Grew it in a polycarbonate greenhouse in 2023, thanks to Natasha @Petrofka for the seeds!

A very beautiful, productive, unfussy variety with a worthy taste (dense sweet flesh, the seed gel has a slight tartness). Mid-season, it grew neatly in a side bed under conditions of a sunlight deficit – so the coloring was less bright. It transports well, can store for a bit, and ripens well indoors off the vine. It will decorate any dining table!

Natasha, is the 1.5 meters (5 ft) height in a greenhouse?

Yes. It is not particularly tall, not aggressive.

A variety with very beautiful and unusual fruits, the more sun it gets, the more anthocyanin. The photos are from different trusses on the same plant. The flesh is dense, sweet, with a slight tang. Height is about 1.5-1.6m (5 ft), it felt perfectly fine growing in a side bed.

Here is what grew for me. All the fruits have very distinct ribs. The striping is there. The bush outdoors was very modest. Did I get the wrong seeds (off-type)?

Natasha, it’s more likely due to environmental factors, maybe megablooms (fused blossoms) or something else. The color is perfectly fine; your anthocyanin is brighter because it grew in direct sun.

Color-wise everything matches perfectly, the terracotta is a bit light, but it is clearly visible. Such a handsome tomato! I’m signing up for seeds from you.
