Vishnya Krasnaya (Red Cherry) Tomato Review

Rate this

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Vishnya Krasnaya (Red Cherry) & Vishnya Zholtaya (Yellow Cherry)

  • 🌍 Origin: Popular Russian commercial cherry varieties. “Vishnya” translates directly to “Cherry” in Russian, hence “Red Cherry” and “Yellow Cherry”.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Very vigorous, sprawling indeterminate plants. They require ample space and staking. One grower noted that they can take up a lot of room and crowd out regular-sized tomato plants if not pruned properly.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Vishnya Krasnaya produces massive, sprawling multiflora-type trusses loaded with tiny, pea-sized red tomatoes. Vishnya Zholtaya (Yellow Cherry) produces yellow fruits that are about 3 to 4 times larger than the red ones.
  • 👅 Flavor: Universally praised for their excellent, sugary-sweet flavor.
  • 🛡️ Disease Resistance Warning: While the yield is incredible, one grower reported that the Red Cherry is highly susceptible to Late Blight, catching it faster than any other variety in the garden.

A wonderful, highly productive variety with excellent taste for growing out in the open dirt (Omsk city, Siberia).

I grew Red Cherry outside in the open dirt. It is very tiny, almost pea-sized, though it is indeed sweet. Produces a huge amount of fruit. However, it was the very first one to catch Late Blight, despite my spraying. It was the first plant to get yanked out of the garden bed and thrown away.. The bush is vigorous and sprawling, takes up a lot of space. In my opinion, it doesn’t belong among normal tomatoes because there’s just not much point to it. There are much better cherry tomatoes out there.

If we are comparing tomato size, then Red Cherry is farrr from the smallest out there, but in terms of taste, it surpasses many “normal varieties”. Plus, I had it interplanted with Vishnya Zholtaya (Yellow Cherry), which produces fruits that are 3 to 4 times larger with the exact same excellent taste…………………. well, just to have a bit of variety to pick from.
