Quick Summary of Mr. Stripey (Polosatiy Gospodin)
- 🌍 Origin: A world-famous heirloom known in Russia as Polosatiy Gospodin. Note: This is the large, bicolor beefsteak version of Mr. Stripey (not the small Tigerella-type salad tomato that sometimes shares the same name).
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate, tall and vigorous. Performs exceptionally well in a greenhouse, where it is typically pruned to 2 or 3 stems.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Massive flat-round beefsteaks. The skin is yellow/gold with striking pink and red blushes and stripes. The interior is just as beautiful, featuring yellow flesh with heavy red/pink marbling. Fruits easily reach 500-700 g (1.1 – 1.5 lbs).
- 👅 Flavor & Texture: The flavor is the main reason this tomato is grown. It is incredibly sweet, fruity, and complex. One grower famously described it as leaving a lingering, gorgeous aftertaste “like a glass of very good cognac.” The texture is dense and meaty.
- 💡 Pro Tips for Growing & Yield: Like many giant bicolors, the yield can sometimes be slightly below average depending on the season. However, the unparalleled taste makes it a permanent resident in almost every garden it touches.
A handsome variety! Tall in closed ground (greenhouse), can be formed into 2-3 stems, the fruits are mostly all large, weighing 500-700 g (1.1-1.5 lbs) with slight ribbing. The flesh is dense, with yellow-pink marbling on the cut, very worthy taste.
This variety has taken up permanent residence in my collection.

Year 2015.
The taste was rated a 5 (out of 5), but the yield did not satisfy us. Planted it again.

I’ve tried many varieties over my 6 years of tomato-mania…
I selected about twenty wonderful varieties for myself during this time, but…..
This year I planted Mr. Stripey (Polosatiy Gospodin) for the first time – A HUGE THANK YOU to Natalya Pavlovna for the seeds !!!
To say it is tasty is an understatement: I would eat a tomato – and walk around for an hour or two with a gorgeous aftertaste, like after a glass of very good cognac!
This is the first out of a hundred-plus varieties I’ve tried that will occupy a quarter of my greenhouse next year (the dimensions of which are 6 by 3.5 meters / 20×11 ft).
I am very surprised – how few reviews there are about it…
A very tasty bi-color !!! I give all new varieties to my husband to taste, very often he says: “It’s a tomato like any tomato!”. When I gave him Mr. Stripey to taste, he asked why I hadn’t grown it before, he liked it very much!
