Abkhazia Pink Tomato Review

Rate this

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Abkhaziya Rozovaya (Abkhazia Pink)

  • 🌍 Origin: A fantastic heirloom tomato originating from Abkhazia, a region in the Caucasus Mountains famous for its rich agricultural heritage and outstanding southern tomatoes. The name translates to “Abkhazia Pink”.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), though it tends to stay somewhat stocky (around 1.5m / 5ft) depending on growing conditions. It has very thick stems, large wide leaves, and a dense canopy. Warning: It is prone to “going to leaf” (excessive vegetative growth) if given too much nitrogen, so watch your feeding!
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Beautiful raspberry-pink beefsteaks. They are oblate (flattened) in shape and grow in dense, tight clusters.
  • 👅 Flavor: Highly rated! Meaty, juicy, and very well-balanced. It has a mild, pleasant sweetness without being overly acidic or sharp.
  • Maturity & Yield: Mid-season with a long, extended fruiting period. Responds very well to proper feeding and watering.

Grown in the greenhouse, pruned to 2 stems. The bush is powerful and dense, but didn’t get very tall for me—about 1.5 meters (5 ft). The leaves are large and wide, sticking out to the sides and drooping at the bottom. Thick stems. It is prone to “going to leaf” (excessive vegetative growth/nitrogen toxicity). Responds well to feeding. The width of a single-stem bush is ~60 cm (24″). Canopy density is high ~90%.

The fruits are meaty, juicy, but weren’t overly large for me. The taste is balanced, not sour and not overly sweet; it’s mild, not sharp or overwhelming: I give it 4.9 out of 5 points. My overall yield and plant growth weren’t the best due to my own mistakes with watering and feeding—I got about 3.5 kg (7.7 lbs) per plant. I will definitely plant it again and study the variety further.

Note: The color in the photos isn’t quite accurate; it should be pink, but because of poor lighting, it looks red. Seeds were from Sveta (Lana_s_Kavkaza).
