Quick Summary of Yantarnaya Rossyp (Amber Placer)
- 🌍 Origin: A modern Russian commercial variety bred by the “Tsentr Ogorodnik” / “Poisk” seed company and officially entered into the Russian State Register in 2018. The name roughly translates to “Amber Placer” or “Scattering of Amber”.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Determinate, compact, and sturdy (tree-type). It has a very distinctive, beautiful leaf type. It supports itself well, doesn’t stretch even in warm indoor conditions, and requires absolutely no suckering/pruning. Excellent for balcony and container growing.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Small, round cocktail-sized tomatoes with a slight tip (beak) on the blossom end. When fully ripe, they turn a glowing amber/orange color. The fruits are very firm, uniform, and typically weigh around 55-70g (2-2.5 oz).
- 👅 Flavor & Culinary Use: Reviews are somewhat mixed; while some note a good flavor, others report that the fruits can be quite firm/hard and taste more like “store-bought” tomatoes. Best used for salads or whole-fruit canning.
- ⏳ Maturity & Yield: Early season. Because of its compact nature, it can be grown early indoors, harvested, and then even replanted outdoors for a second late-summer crop.
A magnificent determinate variety. Especially for the balcony. Sturdy stem, supports itself, doesn’t stretch out even in the warmth, doesn’t branch excessively, requires no suckering, and has a very beautiful, distinctive leaf. The clusters are full, it sets every single flower. The fruits are firm, uniform, with a characteristic shape, weighing 60-70g (2.1-2.5 oz), with subtle streaks, and good taste. Planted in early February, it was already ripe in May. After harvesting, I trimmed it and planted it outdoors in the open ground, and it managed to give another harvest in August.

I didn’t expect to find this variety on the forum, but I am very grateful to Agnia Agarthy for the review. Today I randomly saw it in a store. I went in just for potting soil, practically keeping my eyes shut so as not to look at the seed racks. But when I opened my eyes, it just begged to jump into my hands, saying — “look what a cutie I am, with a little beak, everything just the way you like it. I’m little and orange like the sun, take me with you.” I took it, just hope it’s not a mislabeled off-type!
It seems to me that the ‘Poisk’ company is just selling the ‘Utenok’ (Little Duckling) variety under a new name..
This year I grew Utenok and Yantarnaya Rossyp. The varieties are different. Utenok – the bush is smaller, the tomatoes are brighter, and the taste is sweeter. Yantarnaya Rossyp tomatoes are not bright orange, but truly amber-colored. The taste is a 3 out of 5 (for me) and they are very hard. Tastes like store-bought tomatoes. I won’t be planting it again.

The leaf is medium, green in color. Inflorescence is simple. The pedicel has an articulation. The fruit is rounded, of medium density, slightly ribbed. The color of unripe fruit is green, mature – orange. Number of locules – 2-3. Fruit weight – 55-60g (1.9-2.1 oz). The taste is excellent. The yield of marketable fruits under film covers was 2.8 kg/sq.m. (0.6 lbs/sq.ft).
Variety UTENOK (Little Duckling)

Characteristics:
Included in the State Register for the Russian Federation for growing in open ground and under film covers in private farms. For salads and whole-fruit canning. Early-ripening, uniform ripening. The plant is standard (tree-type) determinate. The leaf is medium-sized, green to dark green. Inflorescence is simple. The pedicel has an articulation. The fruit is rounded with a beak, smooth, medium density. The color of unripe fruit is light green, mature – orange. Number of locules 3-4. Fruit weight 60 g (2.1 oz). The taste is good. The yield of marketable fruits is 2.2 kg/sq.m. (0.45 lbs/sq.ft). Resistant to blossom end rot and root rot. Sets fruit well under adverse weather conditions.
Both varieties are already sitting under the grow lights, we shall see how they compare.
There is also the variety ‘Utya’ (Duck), which I didn’t get the chance to try :((. But the reviews on it were very, very good!
