📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Ananasnyi (Ананасный)
- 🌍 Origin: A commercial Russian variety released by the Biotechnica seed company. Important Note: Do not confuse this variety with the famous American bicolor heirloom Pineapple (which is translated as Ananas in Russian). Ananasnyi is a completely different, solid yellow/orange tomato.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), reaching 1.5–2 meters (5–6.5 ft). Known to be rather late-season in cooler climates, requiring an early indoor start to yield well.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large, oblate (flattened-round) beefsteaks. The color is bright yellow, turning to a deep yellow-orange when fully ripe. Average weight is 250–300g (8.8–10.5 oz).
- 👅 Flavor: Consistently rated as very tasty. It has a pleasant, classic flavor with a nice balance of both sweetness and tartness (acid).
- ⚠️ Yield: Mixed reviews. Some growers report excellent harvests, while others in colder zones struggled to get the plant to mature in time before the season ended.
Description from the seed packet:
A large-fruited variety. High content of sugars and carotene.
Mid-season variety, the period from germination to ripening is 110-115 days. Plants are tall (1.5-2 m / 5-6.5 ft). Fruits are oblate, very large (250-300 g / 8.8-10.5 oz), bright yellow, and meaty. Distinguished by good yield (4-5 trusses per plant with 3-4 fruits per truss).

Can you give us your personal description? How did it turn out for you?
I read somewhere that this is an old German variety. Is that true?

Well, it turned out to be a whole lot of nothing… That’s exactly why I had no intention of showing this disgrace/disappointment in the catalog. 🤐
It is definitely NOT an early variety; it is more like a mid-late or late variety (especially compared to other varieties during last year’s terrible “summer”). The bushes were barely over a meter (3.2 ft) tall, and I won’t even mention the yield. It is quite possible that it simply “ran out of time” in our short summer, and the seeds need to be started much earlier indoors, just like with other late varieties. It is tasty, right on par with other good yellow-orange varieties.
And whose seeds were they?
Biotechnica.

It says Biotechnica right at the top of the photo in the packet! 😉
Here is what my Ananasnyi looks like. The description matches perfectly. The fruit shape is oblate (flattened-round), bright yellow, and if they hang on the vine longer, they become yellow-orange. The taste is pleasant, with a nice balance of sweet and tart 🙂.
I’ve had this variety since 2006; I got it from a coworker who had been growing it for ages. Due to a lack of other varieties back then, it grew in my garden every single year. But nowadays, there are definitely tastier varieties out there. 🙂
I have a variety called Ananas Pineapple, not Ananasnyi – do we consider them the same thing, or not?

No, those are completely different varieties.
Pineapple (Ananas) is a bi-color tomato, while Ananasnyi is a pure yellow color, and as far as I remember, they differ completely in bush shape as well.
