Quick Summary of Barnes Mountain Yellow
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall). Known for being sturdy and unproblematic. The seedlings are strong and thick-stemmed, and the mature plants show excellent disease resistance in the greenhouse.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Massive, oblate yellow beefsteaks. Fruits regularly weigh between 500-800 g (1.1-1.8 lbs), with some giants reaching up to 950 g (2.1 lbs). The flesh is incredibly dense and meaty with very few seed cavities. When sliced, the flesh has a beautiful glossy, almost “buttery” texture.
- 👅 Flavor: Absolutely delicious. Growers describe it as a true tomato classic, with some calling it the absolute best-tasting yellow variety in their entire collection.
- ⏳ Yield & Performance: Mid-season. Yields range from medium to excellent. It sets fruit reliably in various weather conditions, though the thin skin on these giant fruits can crack if left to overripen or if watering is inconsistent.
The seeds were from Redko. Indeterminate, tall, mid-season ripening. Grew it in a greenhouse; the yield was excellent. Large, oblate fruits—juicy, meaty, with a good taste.

Enjoying the Barnes Mountain Yellow variety for the second season.
The seeds were originally from Denis in Donetsk (forgot his last name). Last year I planted his seeds, saved my own from the fruits, and here are the photos from this year. The largest fruit cut open in the photo is 780 grams (1.7 lbs). Delicious! A very meaty variety, and when you cut it, the cross-section looks as if it’s glistening with oil (very glossy and buttery). There are very few seed cavities. A true tomato classic! I’ve picked about a dozen 500-800 gram (1.1-1.8 lbs) fruits so far, and another dozen are still hanging. The tomatoes in the photos are slightly overripe; if I had picked them earlier, they wouldn’t be cracked. I don’t live right next to the greenhouse, so I don’t visit it every day.
The seedlings are not fussy, they are thick-stemmed. I kept them a bit too long in their 0.5L (1 pint) starter cups because May was pretty bad—rainy and cool. Started the seeds around March 8.

Barnes Mountain Yellow – has been in my collection for a long time, it’s the tastiest yellow one.
Greenhouse. Tall, problem-free, doesn’t get sick. Medium yield. The largest fruit was 950 grams (2.1 lbs).
