Black Early Tomato Review

Rate this

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR)

  • 🌍 Origin: A dark heirloom variety known as Black Early.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate, mid-season. Interestingly, the plant habit is described as quite compact for an indeterminate variety, making it manageable.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Dark purplish-pink/black fruits. They have an excellent texture that manages to be both juicy and reasonably meaty at the same time.
  • 👅 Flavor: The flavor profile in this review was flat or bland. As discussed by the growers below, in cooler northern climates, this seems to be a genetic trait of the variety rather than an issue of overwatering.
  • Yield & Climate: Consistently produces a very good yield.

An indeterminate, mid-season salad variety. The bush is compact. The fruits are a black-pink-violet (purple) color. They are juicy, but at the same time quite meaty.

I didn’t like the taste — they were bland. The yield was good.

Is the bland taste a result of overwatering, or is it a varietal trait?

Oleg! Under my growing conditions, it is most likely the second option (a varietal trait). The first option would be an agrotechnical issue.
