Quick Summary of Ambrosia Giant
- 🌍 Origin: A striking and exceptionally vigorous heirloom variety known for its unique color and robust plant structure.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate, with thick, sturdy stems and large, drooping (weeping) foliage. It is a highly aggressive grower—described by our community as a “monster” when grown in a greenhouse, where it quickly reaches the ceiling. Outdoors in the open ground, it remains much more manageable and moderately sized.
- ✂️ Pruning Advice: Because the plant is so powerful and responds excellently to feeding, growers highly recommend pruning it to 3 or 4 stems rather than just 1 or 2. The plant can easily support the extra vines and it will significantly increase your overall yield.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large beefsteaks with a beautiful “rusty” (bronze, copper, or dark bicolored) appearance.
- 👅 Flavor: Rated an absolute 5+ out of 5! It boasts the tender, very sweet, and soft flesh characteristic of top-tier “rusty/bronze” colored varieties.
- ⏳ Yield: In a greenhouse, a well-fed multi-stem plant can yield around 2.5–3 kg (5.5–6.6 lbs) of fruit.
In the greenhouse, I grew it on 4 stems. In the open ground (outdoors), on 2 stems. The bush is sturdy. The stems are thick. The leaves are large and drooping.
For a good yield, you need more stems—it will easily support 3 or 4. It responds very well to fertilizers. The width of a 1-stem bush outdoors is ~40 cm (16 inches). Outdoors, it behaves like a normal plant. The foliage density of the bush is medium, ~50%.
But in the greenhouse, it is a monster. The foliage density at the bottom is ~80%, and at the top ~25…50% depending on the number of stems. It will quickly hit the ceiling. The harvest weight depends on the number of stems and their length; in my greenhouse, I got about 2.5-3 kg (5.5-6.6 lbs) from the plant.
I really loved the taste—tender like all “rusty” (bronze/copper) varieties, sweet, and soft: 5+ out of 5 points.
