Quick Summary of Blue Beauty
- 🌍 Origin: A famous American variety bred by Brad Gates (Wild Boar Farms). In Russia, it was sometimes mistakenly circulated under the translated name “Голубая прелесть” (Blue Charm).
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (though it can sometimes self-top outdoors), regular leaf. Reaches about 4 to 6.5 ft (1.2-2 m) in height depending on growing conditions. Most growers recommend pruning it to 2 stems.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Beautiful oblate (flattened) beefsteaks. The base color is pinkish-red with striking dark blue/purple anthocyanin shoulders. Weight typically ranges from 4 to 7 oz (120-200 g), though some reach up to 13 oz (380 g).
- ☀️ Climate Tolerance: Highly sensitive to extreme heat! It can drop blossoms in mid-summer heatwaves. Growers in hot regions highly recommend growing it under shade cloth.
- 👅 Flavor & Storage: Has an incredible shelf life (can easily sit on the counter for 3+ weeks). Pro Tip: Many growers report that if the taste seems bland or “watery” right off the vine, letting it sit indoors for 1-3 weeks dramatically improves and concentrates the sweetness!
A very interesting and beautiful variety, and most importantly—productive and tasty! A mid-season indeterminate, grew in a greenhouse, height about 4-5 ft (1.2-1.5 m), regular leaf. Blue shoulders appear first on the unripe fruits, and then the tomato turns red while the shoulders turn deep blue. My fruits were about 4 oz (120 g) with a nice sweetness, I really liked them, and the skin is firm but not thick, probably good for canning too. The last fruits ripened indoors and I was pleasantly surprised that the sweetness didn’t disappear at all. 🙂

I will be testing this variety this year, I really liked your description.

Tamara, could you please tell me how many stems you pruned this variety to?
We tasted Blue Beauty… No special admiration… An ordinary tomato with a slight sweetness, you could say the taste is balanced, the skin is neither thick nor thin, it didn’t crack from the rain, not watery, firm. I think it has excellent shelf life, it has been on the bush for over three weeks without overripening. I’d say the yield is average, since my largest fruits were 5 oz (150 g), average up to 3.5 oz (100 g), and there were some at 0.3 oz (10 g). The shape is somewhat ribbed, oblate.
It doesn’t like heat, so it needs to be planted in slight shade, because it burns in the sun and the fruits wither, but despite this, it didn’t get blossom end rot, nor any other diseases. Some stems topped themselves after 2 clusters, while others behaved like indeterminates, so I had a bit of a misunderstanding with pruning it. I doubt I’ll plant it again, although it sure looks handsome!
Apparently I am spoiled by flavors. My husband took a box of these tomatoes to work, and people were ecstatic, asking about the breeder, his website, seeds, and asking for more. Those who didn’t get any, because others took more, are offended they missed out. My family is also demanding that I repeat this variety next year, they say it is fragrant and sweet.
My name for it is Blue Charm (Голубая прелесть) 🙂
The description is like this:
“The fruits are purple in the technical ripeness stage; when fully ripe, the shoulders of the fruit acquire a black-purple color, and the blossom end is red, the color of the lower part of the fruit is pink-purple. The fruits are firm, very productive, good keepers, tasty. Fruit weight about 5 oz (150 g). Mid-season variety. Bushes up to 3 ft (1.00 m) tall.”
Almost everything matches. I wanted to say they weren’t purple, but I dug through my photos and there actually is something lilac-purple when they ripen.
Here is a completely green one, on top.
Up to 3 ft (1 meter) tall in open ground, not a very big bush, mid-season, the fruits are sweet, weighing 3.5-5 oz (100-150 grams) on average, there were some slightly larger and smaller.
I only had one bush and it somehow quickly finished fruiting. I picked 5 tomatoes from the second or third cluster for seeds, put them away and they just laid there and laid there… More than 2 weeks for sure, I had no time. I looked—they were normal, firm, keeping well, so let them be. I did put them in the fridge door until the weekend later, just in case.
Well of course, we have no more tomatoes at home, my son came and ate 4 of them, one smallest one hid in the corner. And the bush was already pulled up, since it behaved like a true determinate and quickly stopped growing. Good thing I saved seeds from at least one. 😄

Your charm is our beauty )))
And I left about ten fruits on the table, they are still lying there, it’s been more than 3 weeks now… every week I taste one – they are good, they don’t lose flavor.
My ripening was also simultaneous and uniform. Interestingly, it bloomed later than all the others, started setting and sizing up later than all, and then suddenly started ripening rapidly. But it held on the bush for up to 3 weeks.
But part of my bush topped itself (3-4 stems), and 2 stems behaved like indeterminates. So go figure how to prune it in the future?
Beautiful and excellent taste. It was the first of the blue ones to bloom, first to yield. It couldn’t withstand the extreme and prolonged heat, it dropped all its blossoms in June and July. It got a second wind in August, when cool weather arrived, it started setting fruit again.
Early blooming
Late blooming
A ripe one like this will definitely please you, there is sweetness and tartness.

Fruits weighing 4-5 oz (120-150 g), good taste, very beautiful – flat round beefsteaks, pink with purple shoulders.

My Blue Charm looked like this.
Inside, it is just red. Impressed me only with beauty, nothing else. The taste was non-existent, like grass. But, to be fair, it was juicy. Eating it was like drinking water. 😄
I don’t even know why there are such different reviews about the taste. Probably, it differs greatly in different conditions.

My Blue Charm grows in a greenhouse. The bush is tall, quite powerful. Productive, very beautiful. Quite early, sown on March 10, it started ripening at the end of June. Ordinary tomato taste with a slight sweetness.
Sofia, I also had that initial impression of the taste, but when it hung for 3 weeks on the bush, and then laid for a week in the house on the table, for some reason it became tastier, I only wanted to eat it, but I had to share with everyone, because everyone only wanted this variety)))

I set some aside to lay a while, maybe the taste of my Charm really will change. She is just too beautiful.
The seeds for the Blue Beauty variety were from A.I. Kulik. The plant turned out strong, sturdy. It grew in the sunniest spot in the south corner of the greenhouse. The variety turned out to be very productive, tying clusters without skipping. Over the season there were about 40 fruits. Many weighed over 7 oz (200 grams). The fruits are very beautiful, with an amazing taste. An excellent keeper, even now, fruits picked at different stages of ripeness have not lost their taste. A favorite!
Girls, please tell me, what is its base color – pink or red?
It’s not very clear from the photos. I want to compare it with Amethyst Jewel – that one is pink with blue.

Mine was pink with blue.
Beautiful variety, grew in the greenhouse, didn’t impress with taste… indeterminate, regular leaf, fruits are oblate, pink with purple shoulders, weight 4-6 oz (120-170g).

Got Blue Beauty from Gusev. Really liked the variety! First of all, it’s beautiful. And quite tasty. It grew under a shade net, it liked it there (unlike some other varieties). Yield was average.
Reread the reviews several times, but couldn’t find the answer. Please tell me, how many stems to prune such beauty to? 📝

IMHO, so that the fruits do not become small, it’s better in 2.
Blue Charm tomato for greenhouses and open ground, about 5 ft (1.5 meters) tall. Fruits are oblate, purple in the technical ripeness stage, when fully ripe the shoulders of the fruit acquire a black-purple color, and the top is pink-red, very tasty and beautiful, average weight 4-5 oz (120-150 grams). Productive and beautiful variety. Really liked it. Sweet.
Dear gardeners, tell me, how does this variety differ from Amethyst Jewel? Very similar in appearance. What about taste?

And it differs in appearance too! Am. Jewel has a tighter cluster, and it looks like a scattering of almost round little tomatoes, while Blue Beauty is larger, oblate, the cluster is “looser”, but both are tasty and both are beautiful!
Seeds from Kristina from Latvia, thanks!!!
Everything is very wonderful, but my variety has splashes and stripes for some reason…. all 3 bushes. I think the variety was mixed up with Red Beauty, according to the description of the variety it has splashes.
Red Beauty grew nearby and was purchased from V. Pulinsh.
Still, it’s Red Beauty.
I purchased the seeds online on an eco seeds site. I liked the variety very much, I recommend it to everyone. The bushes really stood out among all other tomatoes. Grew 2 bushes in the greenhouse. Led in 2 stems. When we harvested it in the fall, it bloomed again, but it was already late. The yield was 4.4 lbs (2 kg) and 5.7 lbs (2.6 kg). As for fruit size, I can say that the range of harvested tomatoes varied from 2.2-9.8 oz (62-278 g) on the first bush and 3-13.4 oz (85-380 g) on the second. Here is a video of my bushes and a photo, unfortunately no more photos fit. In the photo, I am saving seeds for planting in 2020. I will definitely plant it many more times.
In 2020, this variety didn’t please me with its yield, however, the taste and beauty remained at the same highest level. Here is its tasting and cross-section.

On the last post, the tomato is just like a toy 😍 Grew it in the summer of ’21 outdoors in Khabarovsk. It turned out beautiful, but only the lower clusters yielded well, the rest “burned” under the gentle hot sun. Therefore, it looked like a low yielder. Yes, and it only started ripening in August, quite late. The taste was pleasant, the fruits didn’t crack.
Look how differently it performs for everyone! Mine was early and tasty! Seeds were from Sveta @777. Want to plant it again.
