📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Brown Flesh Jumbo

  • 🌍 Origin: Originally from Canada. It was introduced to the RU heirloom community under the translated name Gigantskaya Korichnevaya Plot.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), vigorous, and sun-loving. Outstanding heat tolerance! Even in extreme summer heat waves, it continues to set fruit without dropping blossoms.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Oblate (flattened) beefsteaks, dark mahogany/brown with distinct dark green stripes. Typically weighs around 5.3-7 oz (150-200 g), but can get larger in a greenhouse.
  • 👅 Flavor: Rich, full-bodied, and intense dark tomato flavor. Many growers prefer its taste over other popular striped varieties.
  • ☀️ Resistances: Highly resistant to sunscald (baking in the sun) and blossom drop in high temperatures.

Seeds from Popenko. Here is his catalog description: Giant Brown Flesh (Brown Flesh Jumbo, Canada). Indeterminate. The fruits are oblate, brown with green stripes, good taste, weighing up to 5.3 oz (150 g).

I absolutely loved this variety! 👍 Grew it out in the open ground, here is a photo from June 15th. Last year we had an abnormally hot summer, but this variety proved to be incredibly heat-tolerant. It didn’t drop its blossoms, and didn’t even get sunscalded (baked), unlike the Chocolate Stripes that was growing right next to it.

The fruits are gorgeous, with highly pronounced dark green stripes, the flavor is rich, and the variety impressed me with a heavy yield. Based on the description “weighing up to 5.3 oz (150 g)” you might think the tomatoes are on the smaller side, but no, there were no runts at all, they were all roughly the same weight, around 5.3-7 oz (150-200 g). I think they would have gotten even bigger in a greenhouse, I will definitely repeat it.

The variety came to me with the shortened name Brown Flesh, but I think it’s the exact same variety.

Mid-season, sun-loving, set fruit great when pruned to 2 stems, didn’t drop its blossoms, and what is very important – it was incredibly tasty (unlike its almost-brother, Chocolate Stripes).

P.S. It looks very similar to Girl Girl’s Weird Thing, just slightly more brown, the fruits are a bit larger, and the plant is more vigorous.

Brown Flesh Jumbo is the 4th one in the center.
