📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Bolgarskaya Roza (Bulgarian Rose)
- 🌍 Origin: An Eastern European variety. “Bolgarskaya Roza” translates to “Bulgarian Rose”.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall) and vigorous. It features “sparse” or open foliage, which is great for airflow and disease prevention.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large, beautiful red-pink tomatoes averaging around 400g (14 oz). Interestingly, while official seed descriptions call it “heart-shaped,” growers report it grows as a stunning, heavily ribbed beefsteak with a unique pearlescent skin (very similar to the famous Monterosa). It has thick skin, making it crack-resistant and great for market growers.
- 👅 Flavor & Culinary Use: A harmonious, classic sweet tomato flavor. Very meaty and holds its shape perfectly when sliced. Also highly recommended for juicing.
- ⏳ Maturity: Mid-season. A reliable yielder.

The source of my seeds is linked here. The official website description states:
“Mid-season, indeterminate, red-pink fruits, heart-shaped, large (400g / 14 oz), salad type. A wonder variety! Well-balanced flavor, meaty fruits with thick skin. Holds its shape perfectly when sliced—a true delicacy. Highly attractive for the market and ideal for juices. The bush is vigorous but has sparse foliage.”
Out of all the “Rose” varieties I grew, this one looks the most like Monterosa (Rosa Pavo). It has the exact same soft, rounded ribs and the same pearlescent sheen to the skin. The only difference was during the seedling stage—specifically the leaf structure. The Bulgarian Rose has regular leaves (RL), while Monterosa has… well, a more uniform/smooth leaf, I’m not exactly sure how to describe it botanically 🤷♀️.
Here are the tomatoes side by side in the photos. The taste was identical, too. A classic tomato flavor with some nice sweetness. The yield on the Bulgarian Rose is really good. I’d give it a solid 4+ out of 5.
