📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Buy Tur

  • 🌍 Origin: A Russian commercial dwarf variety. The name “Buy Tur” roughly translates from old Slavic to “Fierce Wild Bull”.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Dwarf / Tree-type (rugose foliage). Stays very compact, reaching only about 60 cm (24 inches) tall. Excellent for small spaces, patios, and container growing. It has a very distinct, beautiful growth habit even at the seedling stage.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Red, smooth plum/paste tomatoes. Warning: Like many elongated paste tomatoes, it is highly susceptible to BER (Blossom End Rot).
  • 👅 Flavor & Culinary Use: A standard, good tomato flavor with decent juiciness. Primarily designed for whole-fruit canning and processing (though some fruits may split slightly in the jar during water-bath canning).
  • ⏳ Maturity: Mid-early season. Consistently productive.

I once overheard a customer in a garden store absolutely grilling the clerk, desperately trying to find seeds for the Buy Tur tomato. I remembered that I actually had them in my seed stash.

It grew exactly as advertised on the packet:

Red Buy Tur plum tomatoes clustered on a compact bush
“An early-season variety with compact, sturdy, tree-like plants. Matures in 105–115 days from germination. Produces smooth, uniform, elongated plum-shaped red tomatoes weighing 2–2.5 oz (60–70 g). Excellent for whole-fruit canning and pickling.”

For me, it turned out to be mid-early. The plant height was around 60 cm (24 inches). Good yield.

The fruits were surprisingly juicy with a normal, standard flavor. They didn’t crack on the vine, but when I used them for canning, a few of them split slightly in the jars.

I really liked Buy Tur, especially because it’s just a beautiful plant. I grew several tree-type dwarfs this year, but this one stood out immediately, even at the seedling stage. And in the summer, I could easily spot its fruits in the mixed harvest pile.

I got my seeds from Galya (Esme); she sent them to me way back in 2014, and I finally got around to growing them. It’s a beautiful tree-type dwarf bush with gorgeous plum/paste fruits, but unfortunately, some of the fruits got hit with BER (Blossom End Rot).

It’s quite tasty and an absolutely ideal variety for canning, but you definitely need to do preventative calcium treatments against Blossom End Rot.
