Dusya Zholtaya (Yellow Dusya) Tomato Review

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Dusya Zholtaya (Yellow Dusya)

  • 🌍 Origin: A commercial variety originally released by Siberian Garden (SibSad). It was only on the market for a year or two before disappearing, but was kept alive by private seed collectors!
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate, but stays relatively short and compact. Usually tops out around 3.5-4 feet (1.1-1.2 m) tall. It has somewhat drooping/weeping foliage.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Despite the name “Yellow”, the fruits actually ripen to a deep, vibrant orange! They are oval/plum-shaped paste tomatoes. The first fruits can be quite large, while later ones are smaller.
  • 👅 Flavor & Texture: Highly praised for being exceptionally sweet with a dense, “buttery” (smooth) meaty flesh. Excellent for fresh eating, sun-drying, and canning.
  • ⚠️ Name Confusion: Because the tomatoes are distinctly orange, many private seed vendors (like Kulik) sell this exact variety under the corrected name “Dusya Oranzhevaya” (Orange Dusya).

Seeds from Ira (Sha_iri). It’s a short indeterminate; grew in the greenhouse pruned to 2 main stems. The bush is compact, the leaves are drooping/weeping, and the fruits are orange, oval-shaped, and absolutely delicious 😋 Yield is average. Mid-season maturity.

Grew it outdoors in open ground. The seedling was gifted to me by Svetikk. But she has a golden green thumb 😘 😘 And for me, the total yield was literally 2 or 3 tomatoes (I don’t even remember exactly), but they were sooo delicious. Just very few of them. 😂 😂 😂

Apparently, this thread should actually be called “Orange Dusya”, because we are talking about an orange tomato, and I actually bought it under the name – Orange Dusya: Mid-season / 6 feet (1.8m) / 12.3 oz (350g) / plum-shape / orange.

Seeds were from Kulik. It grows as a very sturdy, short bush, with a beautiful truss structure and dense foliage. I came to this thread because the seller described it as a tall plant, but in reality, it is clearly below average height. Based on today’s photo of the truss, it looks like it will be mid-late season and will max out at about 3.3 feet (1 meter) tall (and that’s inside a greenhouse!). Overall, it’s growing very nicely, but the lack of height really surprised me. Luckily for me, I planted it at the edge of the bed so it didn’t get “trampled” and shaded out by its tall indeterminate neighbors.

Alena, the seeds originally came from Siberian Garden (SibSad) under the name “Yellow Dusya”. Irina wrote that the variety was sold commercially for a year or two, and then completely disappeared from the market.

But in reality, the color does turn out distinctly orange.

It’s going to end up just like the variety “Königsberg” – it was originally called “Yellow” in some places, but then eventually became known as “Orange” and “Golden”. Though with “Dusya”, it’s even more obvious; the color is definitely not yellow.

Anyway, I bought this variety specifically under the name Orange. 😊 I could start a new thread for the orange one, but I’d be wrong to do so 😊 since it would just be a duplicate.

Leave it here, we all know exactly how old varieties end up getting new names 😉

I really loved Orange Dusya! I grew it outdoors in open ground, and it fruited from early July right up until the end of September when I finally pulled the bushes. The first fruits were larger and we ate them all fresh, but the ones from the upper trusses were perfectly sized to be used for canning in jars. Very meaty and delicious.

An absolute favorite of mine! It has a very buttery/smooth flesh. The bushes are about 3.6-4 feet (1.1-1.2 m) tall, very well-behaved and not pushy. The yield is average, but the fruits are quite large. It’s not the best choice for canning jars, because the fruits often won’t fit through the jar’s neck!

👨‍🌾 Editor’s Cultural Glossary & History:

Name Confusion (Yellow vs Orange): As Svetlana notes, this variety was originally released by the commercial seed company Siberian Garden (SibSad) under the name “Yellow Dusya”. However, because the fruits so obviously ripen to a deep orange, many private seed sellers and collectors (like the famous Ukrainian breeder Kulik) took it upon themselves to rename it “Orange Dusya” so their buyers wouldn’t complain about getting the wrong color! Both names represent the exact same variety.
