Quick Summary of Giante Friulano (Friulian Giant)
- 🌍 Origin: An Italian heirloom variety from the Friuli region.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate. Possesses absolutely incredible disease resistance and cold tolerance. Growers report it staying perfectly green and healthy even through late autumn frosts, completely shrugging off severe fungal pressures.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Red, ribbed plum or pear-shaped tomatoes. The shape can be somewhat variable. They weigh between 100g and 300g (3.5-10.6 oz). They contain very few seeds and can occasionally have hollow cavities (making them great for stuffing or thick paste).
- 👅 Flavor & Utility: Versatile tomato flavor. Excellent for processing, canning, or stuffing. It also boasts a very long shelf life.
- ⏳ Yield: Above average, largely because the plant simply refuses to die and continues producing fruit much longer than other varieties in the garden.
Friulian Giant. (Giante Friulano)
This variety surprised me. Perhaps the most resistant to unfavorable factors and diseases this season, and not only this season.
I deliberately kept it in the greenhouse until the very end just to observe.
October frosts, rains, dampness, the arrival of late blight (Phytophthora) and leaf mold (Cladosporium), cold soil… Nothing… could break this hero. Green leaves without the slightest signs of illness, wilting, etc. It kept setting fruit, blooming, and if it weren’t for the need to clean out the greenhouses, I would have continued the experiment.
But I had to pull this bush out too, time waits for no one.
So I highly advise trying this variety, first and foremost to those who struggle with various tomato diseases, and then share your impressions. Maybe it’s only in my garden that it works such miracles. I will definitely repeat it.
All characteristics of the variety are excellent. The fruits are red ribbed plums or pears. The shape is sometimes variable.
Weight from 100 to 300g (3.5-10.6 oz). Few seeds, hollow cavities are possible in some fruits, but they do not affect the taste and versatility of the variety. It stores well. The yield is above average, due to the long fruiting period and incredible resistance to diseases and adverse conditions.
I recommend giving it a try!
