Gogosha Tomato Review

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Gogosha

  • 🌍 Origin: A highly regarded old heirloom variety from Ukraine. It made its way into the North American seed-saving community (SSE) years ago and is often compared favorably to other great potato-leaf pinks like Brandywine.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall) and vigorous. It features classic Potato Leaf (PL) foliage. Grows very well in greenhouses where it sets fruit reliably without dropping blossoms.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large, oblate (flattened-round) beefsteaks with a beautiful raspberry-pink color. They are very meaty and typically weigh between 7 to 17.5 oz (200-500 g).
  • 👅 Flavor: Known for a classic, balanced beefsteak flavor with a distinct sweet aftertaste. However, environmental conditions play a huge role—if grown in cold or overly wet outdoor conditions, the flavor can wash out and become ordinary.

What about the taste and yield? Did you grow it outdoors in open ground? Would you plant it again?

It’s beautiful, I have seeds for it from Redko, not sure whether to plant them or not 😕

Grew it outdoors in open ground. Yield was average. Taste was just ordinary.

The Gogosha variety was one of my favorites of 2015. Grew it in a glass greenhouse, a vigorous indeterminate with potato leaves. Pruned it to two main stems, it set fruit without skipping any trusses. Pink fruits up to 1.1 lbs (500 g), very delicious 👍

Super variety!!! The fruits are beautiful, uniform, beefsteak-type flesh, juicy, balanced flavor with a pleasant sweetness in the aftertaste. An old mid-season variety from Ukraine, potato leaf with large 14 oz (400 g) pink oblate fruits, great for slicing.

👨‍🌾 Editor’s Note on Flavor Differences (Greenhouse vs. Open Ground):
Notice the stark contrast in reviews here? Natalya grew Gogosha outdoors and called the taste “ordinary.” But Olga and Valentina grew it in a greenhouse and praised its “pleasant sweetness” and called it a “favorite.”This happens all the time with large pink potato-leaf beefsteaks! These types of tomatoes need consistent warmth and controlled watering to concentrate their sugars. If they are grown outdoors in open ground during a rainy, cool summer, the plant takes up too much water and the flavor literally gets “washed out,” turning a world-class heirloom into a bland, watery tomato. If you live in a cooler climate, definitely put this one under glass or plastic to unlock its true potential!
