📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Gosudar F1 (Sovereign)
- 🌍 Origin: A commercial Russian F1 hybrid. (Note: Because it is a true F1 hybrid, seeds saved from this tomato will not grow true to type next year).
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Determinate (bush). Seed packets rate it at 2.3-2.6 ft (70-80 cm), but grown under cover in a greenhouse, it easily pushes up to 3.3-4.5 ft (100-140 cm).
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Smooth, evenly red, round fruits with a cute little “beak” (tip) on the blossom end. They are extremely dense, multi-locular, and have very thick walls. Weight is around 5.3-6.3 oz (150-180 g).
- 👅 Flavor & Quirks: An incredible lesson in tomato patience! Early in the season, it can taste hard and sour (like a winter supermarket tomato). But if given enough late-summer heat, that thick wall softens into a meaty, tangy, and fabulously delicious slicing tomato that doesn’t turn to mush.
Seed packet description: “Early ripening hybrid for open ground and plastic hoop houses. Time from germination to fruiting is 95-100 days. Determinate plant, 2.3-2.6 ft (70-80 cm) tall. Fruits are round with a ‘beak’ on the blossom end, smooth, very dense, multi-locular, evenly red. Weight is 5.3-6.3 oz (150-180 g). Beautiful and tasty fruits with an attractive shape. High firmness and great shelf life. Good for salads/slicing.”
My photos: A beautifully shaped bush, fruits well. It was the very first one to set fruit, but the ripening happens a bit slower than Bull’s Heart. Height in the greenhouse is 3.3-4.5 ft (100-140 cm). We picked the first ripe fruits on day 103. The taste is on the sour side.
Boys and girls, I want to add an update: by the end of August, it became fabulously delicious!
My family specifically picks this one out in the greenhouse now—it’s not overly mushy like the thin-skinned varieties. The thick, meaty walls have a nice tang and excellent flavor. Once again, it confirms the theory that there are no bad-tasting tomatoes, some just need more time (and heat) than others.
Natalya’s thread is the perfect example of why you should never judge a tomato by its first flush!
Commercial F1 hybrids like Gosudar are intentionally bred with thick walls and high firmness so they have a long shelf life and don’t crack. Early in the season (June/July), when the sun isn’t at its absolute peak, these thick-walled hybrids simply don’t have the heat units required to convert their starches into sugars, leaving them tasting like “glassy supermarket tomatoes.”
But if you leave those exact same thick-walled tomatoes on the vine during the blistering heat of August? The intense sun finally breaks down those starches, transforming the hard walls into a rich, tangy, meaty slicer that holds up perfectly on a sandwich without turning to mush!
