Grandma’s Joy (Babushkina Radost) Tomato Review

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Babushkina Radost (Grandma’s Joy)

  • 🌍 Origin: A highly regarded heirloom variety circulated by Russian and Ukrainian private seed collectors (originally sourced from a Ukrainian grape growers’ forum and popularized by Vera Monakhova). The name translates to “Grandma’s Joy”.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate. A tall, vigorous plant that easily reaches 2 meters (6.5 ft) in a greenhouse. Performs exceptionally well both indoors and outside in open ground, showing good heat tolerance.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large to very large, round to oblate beefsteaks. The color is a beautiful raspberry-red. Fruits have a tender skin, very meaty flesh with few seeds, and often feature slight pleating/ribbing at the stem end (shoulders).
  • 👅 Flavor: Highly praised for its classic, sweet, and rich tomato flavor. Very juicy.
  • ⏳ Maturity & Yield: Mid-season, leaning towards mid-late. Yields are above average. Growers note it sets fruit reliably even in less-than-ideal conditions and has strong trusses that support the heavy tomatoes well.

Variety from Vera Monakhova. Indeterminate variety, mid-season, closer to late. In the greenhouse, it reached a height of 2 meters (6.5 ft). The yield is above average, the fruits are large and very large, of good quality, round, red-raspberry color. There are few seeds in the fruits, the skin is not tough, it’s tender. Classic tomato flavor. I really liked the variety.

I will definitely plant it! But all of mine are grown out in open ground. Will it like the heat or not? I’ll have to wait and see.

It performed very well for me in open ground. Very productive and tasty. I’ve sent it out to many people here on the forum. I personally received it from Ukraine via a grape growers’ forum. The variety has become a permanent resident in my garden.

In the greenhouse, the Babushkina Radost variety turned out to be productive, tall (2 meters / 6.5 ft), and mid-season in maturity. The fruits were large, raspberry-colored, and oblate in shape. Tasty, juicy-meaty, and sweet.

It set fruit well in less than favorable conditions, and supported the trusses perfectly without kinking. The fruits are very beautiful, with a slight pleating/gathering at the stem end (shoulders).
