Quick Summary of Hypeel 108 F1

  • 🌍 Origin: A commercial determinate F1 hybrid. The name “Hypeel” generally indicates varieties bred specifically for easy peeling and mass commercial canning/processing.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Determinate (bush), medium height. It produces abundant flowers and sets fruit very reliably, even demonstrating good heat tolerance. Despite being a bush variety, staking or caging is mandatory due to the heavy fruit load.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Firm, pear-shaped or plum-shaped red paste tomatoes. They are very uniform, weighing around 90-100 g (3.2-3.5 oz) with no green shoulders. They tend to ripen all at once (concentrated yield).
  • 👅 Flavor & Use: Primarily a processing tomato. The fresh taste is often described as bland or unremarkable, but its firm texture makes it perfect for whole canning, pickling, or making sauces.
  • 🛡️ Disease Resistance: Seed packets claim resistance to Verticillium, Fusarium wilt, Early Blight (Alternaria), and bacterial spots. However, growers report it is highly susceptible to Late Blight (Phytophthora) in late summer.

Description from the seed packet:
A mid-early, high-yielding determinate hybrid. The plant is of medium height. It blooms abundantly and sets fruits perfectly; it stands out for its good tolerance to high temperatures. The fruits are firm, weighing 90-100 g (3.2-3.5 oz), pear-shaped, evenly colored, with uniform ripening and a jointed pedicel. Used for fresh consumption and all types of canning. I had seeds from “Prestige”.

From their description: “Early tomato hybrid. Ripening begins 63-65 days after transplanting seedlings into the ground. The hybrid is resistant to Verticillium, Fusarium wilt, Alternaria (Early Blight), Gray leaf spot, and Bacterial leaf spot.”

I planted it in the ground on May 1st under plastic film.

It is not early at all. On August 5th, it was struck by Late Blight (Phytophthora) and I picked them all to ripen off the vine indoors — whatever I managed to save. The taste is absolutely bland, tasteless — but it’s okay for pickling/canning.
