📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Inzhirnye (Fig)

  • 🌍 Origin: A popular Russian heirloom variety. The name “Inzhirnye” translates to “Fig” or “Fig-shaped”.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall). Sturdy vines that typically reach about 4.5 feet (1.4 m). Highly productive and sets fruit reliably even in less-than-ideal weather.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Stunning pink, deeply ribbed (pleated) beefsteaks. Fruits are large, averaging 10 to 18 oz (300-500 g). The flesh is dense, meaty, and has very few seeds.
  • 👅 Flavor: A rich, classic tomato flavor with a prominent sweetness. Not watery at all. Excellent for fresh eating, slicing, and canning.

Inzhirnye. Indeterminate, grows to about 4.5 feet (1.4 m). Fruits run around 10 to 14 oz (300-400 g). Flavor is a rich, sweetish classic tomato taste. The flesh is very meaty, not watery at all.

Extremely productive – I counted up to 27 fruits on a single plant! Medium-thick skin. An awesome all-purpose tomato, great for canning, salads, or just fresh eating.

I really loved this variety, huge thanks to Vera for the seeds. The tomatoes are delicious and, to me, just gorgeous. Round, nicely ribbed, and a beautiful pink color. I’ll definitely be growing this one again.

Indeterminate. It wasn’t an early season variety for me, but the plant was sturdy without being overly aggressive. I pruned it to two stems in less-than-ideal conditions, and it set every truss without skipping a beat.

It pumped out full clusters of beautiful, pleated pink tomatoes weighing 10 to 18 oz (300-500 g). Very meaty, few seeds, and they have a great classic tomato flavor (absolutely perfect for salads and slicing). The vines supported the heavy trusses really well. Hats off and thanks for the seeds, Olya (@Olya Pskovishna) and Tanya (@Tomatanya)! 🎩

Copying this from my garden log from last year. It didn’t let me down this season either.

Inzhirnye.

It was my very first indeterminate to start ripening. Strictly large-fruited (there are literally no small ones on the vine at all). My first five tomatoes weighed around 6.5 lbs (3 kg) combined! A total workhorse, sets every truss. Flavor is solid and really good.

👨‍🌾 Editor’s Note: The “Fig” Naming Convention
In American heirloom circles, we usually associate “Fig” tomatoes (like the historic ‘Red Fig’) with small, pear-shaped cherry varieties. However, in Russian heirloom naming, “Inzhir” (Fig) is frequently used to describe large, deeply pleated or ribbed beefsteaks. The name refers to the ruffled shoulders and shape that resemble a plump, fresh fig fruit rather than a tiny cherry tomato!
