Growers’ Notes and Photos
Jumbo Jim Orange (US origin) – indeterminate, mid-season, and a super heavy yielder. Very tall vine, grew it in the greenhouse and it hit about 6.5 ft (2 m). Sturdy, vigorous plant. I pruned it to two stems. Regular leaf type.
It didn’t drop a single blossom, set every truss perfectly. The fruits are all massive, oblate, with heavily ribbed shoulders, and very uniform in size. Average weight was right around 14-17.5 oz (400-500 g).
Incredibly delicious, aromatic, sweet, and super meaty. Giving the flavor a solid A+. The variety really showed its full potential for me. Awesome for slicing, sandwiches, salads, juicing, and making baby food.
Jumbo Jim Orange was one of my absolute favorites this season. Will definitely be keeping it in my regular rotation. Seeds originally came from Svetlana (Svetlanus), who got them from the Redko collection.
Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste and Storage
- 🌿 Plant: A robust, vigorously growing indeterminate regular-leaf vine. Readily reaches 6.5 ft (2 m) in a greenhouse setting. Responds well to being pruned to two stems and reliably sets blossoms despite weather fluctuations.
- 📈 Yield: Exceptionally high. Sets every truss without dropping blossoms, producing a heavy crop of uniformly large, ribbed beefsteaks averaging 14-17.5 oz (400-500 g).
- 👅 Taste: Top-tier, rated an A+ by reviewers. Described as highly aromatic, meaty, and intensely sweet. Makes a perfect slicer for sandwiches and is juicy enough for processing.
- 📦 Storage: Multiple growers noted that for a large, sweet heirloom, it has surprisingly great shelf life and holds up well on the counter after being picked.
- 🌎 Who Reviewed It: Grown successfully in diverse conditions, spanning from the Mediterranean climate of the Canary Islands (Spain) to the harsh, short-season climate of the Ural Mountains (Russia).
