🍅 Quick take: Jaune Flammee (Yellow Flame) is a classic French heirloom. It’s a mid-season, indeterminate vine that produces heavy trusses of small, bright orange cocktail tomatoes (around 1-2 oz). I couldn’t find a thread for this variety anywhere on the forum, so I really wanted to put in a good word for it. Seeds came from Irina (IrinKo).

My plant grew as an indeterminate. It set its first flower truss after the 10th leaf. The first fruit set happened exactly 2 months (55 days) after I dropped the seeds. It’s a mid-season ripener, hitting maturity around 105-110 days from sowing. I pruned it to two stems. It doesn’t push out a ton of foliage or suckers, so it was super low-maintenance.

Trusses hold 5 to 9 fruits weighing anywhere from 0.5 to 2.3 oz (15-65 g). I think they could size up a bit more under better conditions, but our weather was a total nightmare this year: two weeks of extreme heat followed by two straight months of rain. Even so, the yield was a solid B+.

The little fruits are beautiful. Perfectly round, uniform, and bright orange. Flavor is an easy 5 out of 5. Absolutely loved them, they lean on the sweeter side. Very firm and they don’t crack at all. The skin is pretty thick and tough to chew fresh, but it’s exactly what you want for canning and putting up in jars.

Disease resistance is top-notch. It completely shook off late blight and leaf mold. It was one of the very last vines I pulled at the end of the season. I think this is a fantastic variety, especially if you’re looking for a processing tomato. Definitely growing it again. The only surviving photo I have isn’t the greatest:

So does that mean it’s an off-type in both cases? Nobody seems to be getting 6.3 oz (180 g) fruits, just cherry sizes.

Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste and Storage

  • 🌿 Plant: Indeterminate, regular leaf, mid-season ripener (105-110 days from seed). A well-behaved, low-maintenance vine that doesn’t produce excessive suckers or foliage. Displays elite disease resistance, particularly against late blight and leaf mold.
  • 📈 Yield: Very good. Sets clusters of 5 to 9 small fruits weighing between 0.5 and 2.3 oz (15-65 g) and continues to produce reliably even through extreme heat and heavy rains.
  • 👅 Taste: Rated highly for its sweet flavor. The fruits are firm and crack-resistant. However, because the skin is notably thick, it isn’t ideal for fresh eating unless peeled.
  • 📦 Storage: The thick skin and firm texture make this an exceptional candidate for canning, pickling, and general processing.

👨‍🌾 Editor’s Note: Jaune Flammee True Size
In the thread, a user questions if the plant is an off-type because the tomatoes didn’t reach 6.3 oz (180 g). In reality, true Jaune Flammée (a famous French heirloom) is a cocktail-sized tomato. It typically weighs exactly 2 to 3 oz (60-90 g). The user was likely misled by inaccurate commercial seed packets or generalized catalog descriptions that overstated the size. The 1-2 oz fruits described in the first review are perfectly true to type.
